Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Ruslan Rzayev (ranked 3473 p4p, 3358 weight class) and Dan Markus (ranked 350 p4p, 344 weight class). Ruslan Rzayev had a look across the cage there at his opponent. He definitely means business

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ruslan Rzayev! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Dan Markus! The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, Paul Tew and William Gold.
 The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Rzayev misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Markus throws out a loose jab but Rzayev uses good head movement to avoid it.
Rzayev shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Markus's guard. Rzayev working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Markus's head. Rzayev trying to control the position from guard on top but Markus is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Rzayev loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Rzayev throwing strikes from guard but Markus blocks nicely. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Rzayev accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Markus working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Rzayev. Rzayev wants to pass the guard but Markus is keeping the position.

 That's one minute gone in the round. Markus is looking to stand up but Rzayev isn't so interested in that idea. Rzayev is looking to stand up but Markus won't let him. Rzayev throwing strikes from guard but Markus blocks nicely. Rzayev has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Rzayev with a nice head shot there. Markus wants to sweep but no luck. Rzayev tries to free his leg and advance position but Markus is retaining full guard. Markus is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Markus wants to stand up but Rzayev is controlling him. Rzayev throws a big elbow that misses. Rzayev stands up over Markus, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.  That's three minutes gone in the round. Rzayev wants to control from the top but Markus keeps moving. Rzayev keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Markus's head. Rzayev is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact. Rzayev postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Rzayev lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
 Markus is rocked! Markus can't keep his opponent in guard - Rzayev advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Markus is still in real trouble! Can Rzayev finish him? Rzayev winds up and cracks Markus with a swinging punch to the side of the head. Still in half guard, Rzayev seems content to control. Markus tries to get to full guard but Rzayev has control of the leg. Markus seems to have recovered his senses.
 That's four minutes gone in the round. Rzayev wants to control but Markus is keeping him busy. Rzayev working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that. Markus has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Rzayev is working away from the top position though. Rzayev is trying to control the action in half guard but Markus is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Rzayev trying to advance position but Markus counters by regaining guard. Markus is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Hammerfist, elbow! yells Rzayev's corner. There ya go! There ya go! The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Rzayev content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots. Rzayev scoring with punches to the head and body. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
Ruslan Rzayev dominated that round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.
Rzayev tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Markus swivels and escapes. Rzayev is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Markus can do to turn this around?
Rzayev clinches up with Markus and pushes him back against the cage. Rzayev lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards. Markus wants a takedown but no success here.

Rzayev fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Markus manages to avoid it. Rzayev ducks under a wild hook from Markus. Rzayev pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way. Ruslan Rzayev is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Some wild striking there from Rzayev.
Markus waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Rzayev. Rzayev misses with a takedown attempt - Markus sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Rzayev shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Markus pinned against the cage. Markus gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ruslan Rzayev. That's going to take a lot out of him. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Markus swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Markus wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
Rzayev shoots in and bounces Markus off the cage to secure the takedown into guard. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Markus manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Rzayev manages to get himself to full guard.

Rzayev has his hands on Markus's head, controlling the position. Rzayev seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission. Markus stops Rzayev from standing up.
 That's two minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Rzayev tries to land a sweep but no joy. Markus is just content to waste time from the top position. Rzayev takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard. Rzayev wants to get back to his feet but Markus passes into half guard.
Rzayev knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Markus on the ground.
 That's three minutes gone in the round. Markus is thwarting Rzayev's attempts to control the position. Rzayev is looking for a sweep. Markus is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Rzayev trying to get back to full guard but Markus takes advantage of the position and moves to full mount! Rzayev wants to control but Markus is having none of it. Rzayev tries to reverse the position but Markus maintains control. Markus pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage. My spies in Roosters Coop inform me that Markus has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends! Rzayev is desperately trying to improve his position but Markus has a good base and remains in mount.

Rzayev is looking to clinch. Markus throws out a counter right but Rzayev avoids it with no problem. Rzayev misses with a body shot.
Markus appears to be waiting to throw a counter punch to the body. Danga de danga de dang - Markus scores with a four punch combination! Markus throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. Rzayev shoots in looking for a takedown but Markus manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Rzayev's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away. Markus throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Rzayev counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Rzayev. Markus misses with some punches.

Markus takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Markus has momentary wrist control but Rzayev slips an elbow through the middle. Markus manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Rzayev manages to get himself to full guard.

Rzayev cracks Markus with a solid left hand. Markus is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Rzayev is looking to work some ground and pound but Markus has wrist control. Rzayev won't allow Markus to sweep him here. Rzayev scoring with punches to the head and body. Markus being controlled here, momentarily. Markus working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Rzayev.
 That's four minutes gone in the round. Rzayev throws a big right hand that misses. Rzayev postures up and lands a big shot to Markus's brow. Rzayev stopping the sweep attempt from Markus. Rzayev in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Rzayev with a nice head shot there. Rzayev gets to his feet and stands over Markus, holding his ankles. He dives in with a big left hand that connects! Markus felt that one! Rzayev unloads more punches and elbows and this one is over! The ref has dived in to save Markus from any more punishment!
