This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the super heavyweight division. Introducing today's competitors. And in the blue corner, fighting out of Las Vegas, with a TWGC record of 51 wins and 32 losses; Isaac Vernon! The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Ren Mimura and Shigeki Sano.
The official calls the fighters to the middle and the contest is under way. Chai fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Vernon changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.

Or the ring announcers come to think of it. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Vernon wants to free his trapped foot but Chai is holding on for dear life with his legs. Vernon prevents Chai from improving his position. Vernon wants to pass the guard but Chai is defending well.

Vernon is thwarting Chai's attempts to control the position. My spies in HELLCADEMY inform me that Vernon has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends! Vernon prevents Chai from improving his position. We've been hearing good reports from Chai's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Chai is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Vernon's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Vernon's back! Vernon has his hands on Chai's head, controlling the position. Chai might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

 That's twelve minutes gone in the round. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Vernon holds on and takes a little breather. Vernon looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Vernon is adopting a defensive guard. Vernon looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Chai puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

And that's the end of the fight! Chai takes the fight on points by 4 to 2. A relieved looking Dragon Li Chai thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it. |
