Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Viktor Hughes (ranked 4731 p4p, 24934 weight class) and Magomed Magomedsharipov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Magomedsharipov has a pretty significant injury - he really shouldn't be fighting right now but he's a warrior and he's here none the less! Magomed Magomedsharipov told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 8 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Viktor Hughes! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 19 - 63 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Magomed Magomedsharipov! The judges for this bout are Dean Styles, Reed Andrews and Lou da Vinci.
 The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hughes has managed to clinch.
Magomedsharipov looks winded! Hughes lands a nice elbow from the clinch.
 It looks like Magomed Magomedsharipov has been cut. Hughes lands an elbow inside that Magomedsharipov shrugs off. Hughes looking for a takedown. Hughes wants to take the fight to the mat but Magomedsharipov manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch. I was talking to Hughes's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight. Hughes drops down looking for an ankle pick but Magomedsharipov pulls his leg out and moves away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Viktor Hughes. That's going to take a lot out of him. Magomedsharipov fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hughes clinches up with Magomedsharipov and pushes him back against the cage. We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Magomedsharipov has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat. Magomedsharipov is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Hughes is defending well.
 That's one minute gone in the round. Hughes creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Magomedsharipov's defenses. Hughes is working for takedown but Magomedsharipov is calmly controlling the position for now. Hughes is looking for a takedown. Hughes gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head. Magomedsharipov takes an elbow to the forehead.
Hughes has Magomedsharipov pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Hughes pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Magomedsharipov tumbling to the mat - Hughes dives into Magomedsharipov's guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Hughes sitting in guard here, content to control. Hughes has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent. Hughes trying to control but Magomedsharipov is working from the bottom.

Hughes drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Hughes jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Magomedsharipov has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Hughes can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Hughes works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Hughes looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Hughes has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Magomedsharipov defend it? Hughes steps over the head and cranks it - Magomedsharipov is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Hughes!
