The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Afzal throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Gracie was covering up waiting for the punch and Afzal finishes the takedown easily into guard. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Afzal is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Afzal stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Gracie swivels though and keeps the full guard. We've been hearing good reports from Gracie's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. Gracie pulls Afzal in close to his closed guard and prevents Afzal from doing any damage or advancing position. Afzal trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Afzal has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at Cozad MMA Hilo. Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Afzal is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Gracie looking to control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Afzal pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Gracie is keeping the position for now.
Gracie is looking for a triangle but Afzal pushes his legs off easily.
Gracie is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Afzal has his hands clasped together but Gracie extends and breaks Afzal's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Gracie.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:57 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Rafael Gracie!
