PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Wala Sapi (ranked 23334 p4p, 23436 weight class) and Dawindi Buktot (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 69 - 59 - 14, fighting out of Las Vegas, Wala Sapi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 52 - 83 - 6, fighting out of Las Vegas, Dawindi Buktot!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Cecil Peabody and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
We've got one fighter who appears to only be looking to counter and the other not looking particularly aggressive either, so we could be in for a dull fight.

Buktot looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Sapi preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
Still in half guard, Buktot seems content to control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Buktot is trying to control. Sapi wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Sapi tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
Sapi desperately trying to maintain half guard.

Buktot sitting and controlling from the half guard.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Buktot shoots in but no luck this time.
Sapi is looking to counter with a body kick.
Buktot stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Buktot wants it to stay on the feet.
Buktot throws a big counter head kick but Sapi avoids it with no problem.
Sapi closes the distance and clinches up with Buktot, looking for a takedown. Sapi pushes Buktot against the cage but Buktot circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Buktot looking to score a takedown here. Sapi is defending well but Buktot drives through and ends up in Sapi's guard.
Sapi is pulling down on Buktot's head. It's preventing any offense from Buktot, at least for the moment.
Buktot trying to control the position from guard on top but Sapi is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Buktot stands up from guard. Let's bang!

Horrible takedown attempt by Sapi or perhaps it was just good defense by Buktot, which made it look bad.
Buktot throws a counter combo.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Wala Sapi. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Buktot shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Sapi napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Sapi is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
Both fighters take a look at the clock.

Sapi is trying to control Buktot's posture but Buktot avoids it.
Buktot is staying tight to Sapi's torso, preventing him from escaping.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Buktot is looking to take a break and control but Sapi is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Dawindi Buktot dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Buktot lands a kick to the ribs of his opponent. Nice work there - in and out in a flash.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Buktot is defended easily by Sapi.
Sapi quickly followed up with a counter body kick but doesn't connect.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sapi shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Buktot but Buktot pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Sapi shoots in looking for a takedown but Buktot manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Sapi's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

and Buktot finishes the little exchange by landing a big kick to the body.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Buktot closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Buktot is thwarting Sapi's attempts to control the position.
Buktot is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Buktot thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Sapi's head.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Buktot looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Sapi with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Buktot's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Sapi is concentrating on defense, preventing Buktot from advancing position.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Sapi throws a head kick that looked like it stung.

Sapi shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Buktot napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Buktot is trying to control Sapi's posture but Sapi avoids it.
Buktot has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Dawindi Buktot will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

Sapi will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Buktot steps in looking to counter with the mid kick but it doesn't connect.
Sapi keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Buktot looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Sapi is fending him off so far but Buktot persists. Nope, Sapi circles away and we're back to standing.

Wala Sapi has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dawindi Buktot.
Buktot throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Sapi's waist but Sapi gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Buktot off to one side.
Sapi changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.

Sapi slaps away a takedown attempt from Buktot, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Sapi thinks about countering with a body kick.
Sapi shoots in looking for a takedown. Buktot tries to sprawl out of it but Sapi keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Buktot manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Buktot doesn't fully commit to the body shot counter.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Sapi shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Buktot is looking to control Sapi's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Buktot avoid being mounted?

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Sapi is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Buktot wants to get back to full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Sapi keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Wala Sapi has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Dawindi Buktot is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Buktot changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Sapi tries to avoid it but Buktot manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Sapi to the ground. Sapi escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Sapi tries to counter with a takedown but Buktot is quick to defend against it.

Sapi shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

And that's the end of the fight!
Wala Sapi showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Buktot has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
