This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the super heavyweight division. Introducing today's competitors. And in the blue corner, fighting out of Las Vegas, with a TWGC record of 56 wins and 36 losses; Isaac Vernon! The judges for this bout are Ren Mimura, Taro Takaoka and Yukihiro Yamamoto.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way.
Vernon shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Chai's guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Chai (0) vs (2) Vernon Chai has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. Chai being controlled here, momentarily. Let's hope that Vernon has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight. Vernon stopping the sweep attempt from Chai. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Chai is working hard here to advance position. Chai might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Chai is controlling Vernon's posture. Chai is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Chai is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Vernon stays in close to Chai's body and controls the position.

Chai is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Vernon is thwarting Chai's attempts to control the position.
 That's four minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Vernon in particular looking to stall. Chai controlling the leg, holding on to half guard. Chai trying to control here.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Chai is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Chai trying to control the hands but Vernon breaks the grip.
 That's nine minutes gone in the round. Chai is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Vernon is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. Vernon is riding his opponent, not letting Chai buck him off. Chai rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.

My spies in HELLCADEMY inform me that Vernon has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

 That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Vernon with a momentary lay and pray from half guard. It looks like Vernon might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it. Vernon's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige. Vernon is thwarting Chai's attempts to control the position.
 That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. Still in half guard, Vernon seems content to control. Vernon tries to pass the half guard into mount. Chai knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Vernon controlling the action here. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
And that's the end of the fight! Vernon wins on points by 8 to 0. Isaac Vernon really struggled to get his t-shirt on before his hand was raised. Making sure that Pulling Guard logo gets some air time is pretty tricky when you're all sweaty. |
