PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Oreo Hopgood (ranked 251 p4p, 571 weight class) and Biggie Smoke (ranked 40 p4p, 79 weight class). Hopgood comes to the cage accompanied by Don't Stop The Music - Rihanna. Biggie Smoke told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the light heavyweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 9 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Oreo Hopgood! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Biggie Smoke! The judges for this bout are Columbo Gatti, Franklyn Lucas and Dean Styles.
 The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smoke gets tackled into the cage by Hopgood. Hopgood maintains the clinch. Hopgood misses with a punch to the body.
Smoke tries for a takedown. No joy.
Hopgood prevents a takedown attempt there.
Hopgood is fighting off a takedown attempt but Smoke is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Hopgood to the mat. Hopgood regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat. Hopgood throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Smoke trying to control the position from guard on top but Hopgood is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Smoke showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
Hopgood looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
 That's one minute gone in the round. Smoke pushes down on Hopgood's leg and manages to get into half guard. Smoke trying to control from half guard but Hopgood is working away. Smoke not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Hopgood trying to hold on to Smoke's head to control him but Smoke postures up.
Hopgood is looking for a sweep. Smoke is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
 That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Hopgood wants to control but Smoke is keeping busy and won't allow it. Hopgood is refusing to be controlled, as Smoke sits in half guard. The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work. Hopgood is trying to get back to full guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Smoke misses with a head shot. Hopgood uses the momentum to regain guard. Smoke trying to control but Hopgood is working from the bottom. Hopgood lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

 That's three minutes gone in the round. Hopgood seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Hopgood cracks Smoke with a solid left hand. Smoke looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it. Hopgood throws a big right hand that misses. Hopgood trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Hopgood scoring with punches to the head and body. Smoke is controlling Hopgood's posture. Smoke lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

 That's four minutes gone in the round. Hopgood wants to sweep here but Smoke controlling him for the moment. Smoke must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Smoke trying to control the position from guard on top but Hopgood is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Smoke looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights. Hopgood looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it. Smoke preventing the sweep. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Hopgood controls Smoke momentarily but Smoke frees himself. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Oreo Hopgood will probably get the nod. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.
Smoke scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Hopgood doesn't seem bothered though. A jab from Smoke misses. Smoke fails to land with a series of punches.

 It looks like Biggie Smoke has been cut. A decent looking cross lands there for Hopgood. Smoke shoots in looking for a takedown but Hopgood manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Smoke's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away. Smoke fails with a takedown attempt from distance. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Smoke misses with a body shot.

Smoke slaps away a takedown attempt from Hopgood, before circling back to the center of the mat.
 That's one minute gone in the round.
Smoke gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Hopgood to score an easy takedown into full guard. Smoke is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Hopgood throws a sloppy strike and Smoke has hooked up an armbar on the loose arm! He's turned and extended fully! Hopgood is forced to tap! Great BJJ from Smoke!
