PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Bill Grimes (ranked 4036 p4p, 25453 weight class) and Michael Brandt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Brandt has chosen Broken Out In Love by Mark Crozer as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Bill Grimes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Michael Brandt!
The judges for this bout are Alyssa Summers, Eddie Farnsworth and Russell Pearce.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Grimes drives through with a takedown into guard.
Grimes wants to stand but Brandt has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Brandt punching from the bottom - just letting Grimes know he's still in a fight.
Brandt is trying to keep Grimes in close.
Brandt really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Grimes. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Brandt is on top in guard.

Grimes has Brandt pulled in close to control his posture.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Brandt missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.

Brandt being controlled here momentarily.
Grimes lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Grimes might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Grimes lands a couple of digs.
Grimes looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Grimes sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Brandt's guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well, if Grimes is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight� I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza� Yum. Can't wait.

Brandt is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Grimes pulls his head out easily.
Brandt wants to improve his position but Grimes is controlling well.
Grimes sitting and controlling from the half guard.
Grimes wants to get back to his feet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Grimes performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Brandt is trying to maintain the position but Grimes is very close to passing his half guard.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Some wild striking there from Grimes.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Grimes gets a clinch.

Grimes's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Brandt is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Brandt lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Grimes circles away quickly and effectively.
Crunch! Brandt slams his shin into Grimes's torso.
Grimes throws a leg kick but Brandt sees it coming and moves out of range.

Grimes clinches with his opponent.
We've been informed that Brandt has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Grimes has Brandt pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Brandt manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Brandt tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Grimes just stands there and leans against the cage.
Grimes keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Brandt's efforts to push away.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Grimes gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Brandt regains guard.
Brandt wants to stand and escape but Grimes is having none of it.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Bill Grimes dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Grimes tries to bum rush Brandt with a series of wild strikes but Brandt uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Grimes clinches up with Brandt and pushes him back against the cage.
Grimes content to slow the pace in the clinch.
Grimes has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Brandt avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Brandt pushes off an throws an elbow but Grimes leans to the side and avoids it. We're back to clinching against the cage.

Grimes gets a trip takedown into half guard.
Brandt is looking to control Grimes's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Brandt avoid being mounted?
Grimes wants to stand but Brandt has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Grimes seems to be working for a kimura but Brandt defends the submission attempt.
Brandt trying to hold on to Grimes's head to control him but Grimes postures up.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Grimes is working for a kimura from half guard. He's really concentrating on the hold and it's allowed Brandt to slip a leg under and get back to full guard.

Brandt has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Grimes can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Grimes is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Grimes passes Brandt's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Grimes perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Grimes seems to be looking for submissions.
Grimes moves nicely into side control.
Bill Grimes overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Grimes taking a breather here.

Grimes is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Brandt has escaped the position, nice work there.
Brandt wants to get back to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Grimes controls the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Brandt is looking for a sweep.
The referee asks Grimes politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Grimes prefers to stall for the moment though.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Grimes stands up.
Brandt shoots in but Grimes avoids the takedown attempt easily.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Bill Grimes dominated that second round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Brandt throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
It looked like Grimes was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Grimes swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
A clash of legs there as Grimes blocks the low kick.

Grimes throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Brandt was covering up waiting for the punch and Grimes finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Grimes content to stall in guard here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Grimes slips nicely into half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Grimes tries to stand but can't do so whilst Brandt controls his leg.
Grimes performing his best blanket impression for a moment.

Grimes is working for a submission of some sort.
Grimes works his way into side control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Brandt seems a little lost for a moment, as Grimes dominates the positioning.
Brandt is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Grimes working the head and body with strikes.
Grimes is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Grimes works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Grimes has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Brandt fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Brandt shoots in looking for a takedown. Grimes tries to sprawl out of it but Brandt keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Grimes manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Grimes scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!

Grimes takes the fight into the clinch.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Brandt wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Grimes has him pressed against the cage.
Brandt jumps guard but Grimes stands there with Brandt around his waist. Brandt gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Bill Grimes has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Michael Brandt.

Grimes has clasped his hands together around Brandt's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.

Grimes has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Brandt is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Grimes yanks on the arm and Brandt is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Grimes.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:45 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Bill Grimes!
