Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Andrew Sackson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Gustavo Luiz! The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Matheus Silva and Seu Braga.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Sackson looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Luiz! Sackson is standing up, even though he is in mount. Luiz slips a jab and a cross from Sackson.
Sackson gets a takedown into half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Sackson is pressing down on Luiz's thigh, looking to free his foot. Luiz is holding on for now. Sackson seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Luiz looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Luiz tries to roll over but Sackson keeps him under control. Sackson trying to control the pace. Luiz looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
That's one minute gone in the round. Sackson wants to free his trapped foot but Luiz is holding on for dear life with his legs. Luiz looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Sackson knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Luiz on the ground.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Luiz shoots and misses and Sackson counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Luiz's guard now. Luiz looks gassed! Sackson gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent. Sackson scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. Sackson controlling the action here. Luiz moves into full guard.
Sackson not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. Sackson wanted to stand there but Luiz had control of the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Sackson wants to control from the top but Luiz keeps moving. Luiz being controlled here, momentarily. Luiz working for a triangle but Sackson defends it easily.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Sackson pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Luiz is keeping the position for now. Sackson stands up and waves to Luiz to follow him.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Sackson shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Luiz as he jumps to the side. A punch combination from Sackson misses. Luiz gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard. Sackson looking to pass the guard. Sackson is working hard here to advance position. Sackson slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Sackson stands up and waves to Luiz to follow him. Luiz throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Sackson counters with a nice double leg into guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Sackson stays in close to Luiz's body and controls the position. Luiz working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Sackson doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Sackson manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Sackson passes Luiz's left leg - he's now in half guard. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Luiz is looking for a sweep. Sackson is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Nice strikes from Sackson there. Sackson stands up and beckons Luiz to join him on the feet. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Sackson shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Sackson decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow. Sackson looking for a takedown here - he's got it. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Andrew Sackson dominated that round. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Luiz tries to clinch but fails miserably and Sackson counters with a nice double leg into guard. Luiz is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Sackson has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Sackson gets to his feet. Luiz looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son! Sackson closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. Well, if Sackson is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Sackson decides to stand up. Luiz doesn't succeed with the takedown and Sackson counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Luiz's guard now. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Luiz looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Sackson stands up from Luiz's guard - Sackson perhaps looking for a knockout.
That's one minute gone in the round. Sackson changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Luiz looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Andrew Sackson overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Sackson looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. Luiz is not content to let Sackson control the position. Sackson decides to stand back up. Luiz shoots in but doesn't get the takedown so Sackson counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility. Luiz keeping full guard, as Sackson tries to pass.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Luiz working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Sackson doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Sackson manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Luiz is looking to sinch up a triangle. Sackson throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Luiz's body to avoid the submission. Luiz has instead reached around Sackson's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Luiz arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.
