Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Matheus Gomes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kimi Maia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Gomes might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Mike de Mosqueiro. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Matheus Gomes! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Kimi Maia! The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Edson Gomes and Daniel Cesar.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Excellent takedown into side control there by Maia. Gomes manages to work his way to half guard, despite Maia's best efforts. Gomes trying to hold on to Maia's head to control him but Maia postures up.
Maia is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Gomes sees it coming and defends easily. Maia is looking for a kimura but Gomes is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Maia to get the leverage. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Gomes regains full guard. Nicely done. Gomes looking for a guillotine here but Maia defends easily.

Maia is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Gomes is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Gomes has escaped and now he's on top! We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Maia can do anything to dispel that myth. Gomes avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Gomes trying to control but Maia is working from the bottom. Gomes lands a couple of digs. Gomes trying to control the position from guard on top but Maia is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Gomes is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Maia is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Maia has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Gomes can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Gomes wants to control from the top but Maia keeps moving.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Gomes fails with the takedown and Maia counters with a nice double leg into guard. Gomes is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Maia is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Gomes is in trouble! Gomes doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Gomes manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Gomes wants to control from the top but Maia keeps moving. Maia throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.

That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Gomes tries to close the distance and clinch up but Maia swats him away and circles back towards the center. Horrible takedown by Maia or perhaps it was just good defense by Gomes which made him look bad. Gomes shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Gomes is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Maia is just riding it out for now. Gomes eventually gives up the hold. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Maia looking for submissions from an awkward position here. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Kimi Maia will probably get the nod. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.
Gomes is looking to clinch. Gomes shoots in and drives through. Maia sprawls well. Maia wants to clinch and Gomes counters with a three punch combo that has Maia backing up. Maia nods at Gomes to acknowledge the strikes. Maia with a lazy takedown attempt and Gomes makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range. Maia looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Gomes is fending him off so far but Maia persists. Nope, Gomes circles away and we're back to standing. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gomes wants to clinch. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Gomes tries to close the distance and clinch up but Maia swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Gomes takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away. Gomes misses with a takedown and Maia counters with a single leg into guard. Gomes didn't expect that. Maia is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Gomes is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Maia wants to pass the guard but Gomes is keeping the position. Maia has gone for a leg lock! Gomes slips out almost immediately though and dives into Maia's guard. Maia has a loose triangle. Maia Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Gomes's back instead. Gomes is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.

Kimi Maia showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!
Maia tries for a takedown but Gomes circles away easily and Gomes counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work. Maia shoots in for a takedown but Gomes shows good takedown defense. Gomes changes levels and scores with a jab to the body. Gomes moves in looking to clinch but Maia pushes him off. Gomes tries to clinch there but Maia circles away.
Excellent takedown into side control there by Gomes. Maia is looking to reverse the position. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Maia is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Gomes controls Maia momentarily but Maia frees himself. Kimi Maia has got the better of the ground game so far. Maia tries to free his leg and advance position but Gomes is retaining full guard. Matheus Gomes has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Maia gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Gomes counters with a one-two to the body.
And that's the end of the fight! Matheus Gomes showed his dominance in that final round. I think Maia has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
