PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Craig Patton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Chris Caine (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Caine has chosen All These Things as his entrance music. Chris Caine told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Craig Patton! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Chris Caine! The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, William Peck and Dillan Fox.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Patton looks for a takedown but Caine sprawls well. Patton looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this! Patton fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Caine avoids it really well and circles away. Caine shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Patton's guard. Caine seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Let's hope that Caine has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight. Caine scoring with punches to the head and body. Caine with a nice head shot there. Caine throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Caine lands a couple of elbows. Caine stands and steps away. Patton gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
That's one minute gone in the round. Caine closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. Caine working the head and body with strikes. Caine scoring with punches and elbows. Caine working the ground and pound. Patton tries to improve position but can't. Caine wants to control but Patton is keeping him busy. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Caine stands up and we're back to a striking position. A good leg kick by Caine. Caine moves into the clinch. Caine tightens his grip and picks Patton up, before dumping him to the ground. Patton manages to land in guard. Patton looking to control.
Caine tries to free his leg and advance position but Patton is retaining full guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Patton can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Caine controls the pace. Caine loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Caine postures up.
Caine looking to pass the guard. The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Caine preventing the sweep.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Caine looking for a takedown here - he's got it. This has been an exciting period of action! Patton looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Caine distracts Patton with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm. Caine looking to pass the guard. Patton is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Caine works over Patton with some ground and pound from guard. Connects with an elbow from the bottom, proving to the judges that he's still active off his back. Caine advances position into side control! Caine tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Caine has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. You can see the frustration on Patton's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Caine in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Patton tries to improve position but can't. Caine stands up and beckons Patton to his feet. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Chris Caine dominated that round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Patton tries for a takedown but Caine sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Caine bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. Caine lands a few punches from side control. The referee asks Caine politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Caine prefers to stall for the moment though. Caine working away. Caine is looking to take a break and control but Patton is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Caine controlling the position. Patton manages to get one leg in to regain half guard. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Patton has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Caine is working away from the top position though. Patton looking for submissions off his back. Caine is figuring out what he wants to do next. Patton looking for submissions off his back. Patton tries to get to full guard but Caine has control of the leg.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Caine looks to score some points with some ground and pound. Patton is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Caine pulls his head out easily. Nice strikes from Caine there. Chris Caine has got the better of the ground game so far.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Caine changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Patton looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Patton is looking to regain half guard here but Caine keeps moving and retains side control. Caine is looking to take a break and control but Patton is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Caine working away.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Patton stops Caine from passing to mount. Patton is trying to improve his position. Caine is staying tight to Patton's torso, preventing him from escaping. Caine working away.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Caine drives through with a takedown into guard. Patton not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Patton wants to sweep but no luck. Patton avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Patton working for a triangle but Caine defends it easily.
Patton lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Caine! Caine is writhing around trying to get back to his feet. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Chris Caine showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!
Patton gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here. Caine has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Patton uses from the top position. Caine manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Patton manages to get himself to full guard.
Patton is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Caine defends well. Caine stands up from guard. Let's bang! Caine changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Patton looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Patton wants to control but Caine postures up. Caine creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots. Caine working the head with strikes. Caine lands a few punches from side control. Both fighters are breathing heavily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Caine working away. Patton gets back to half guard. Patton trying to control but Caine postures up.
Patton moves into full guard.
Patton isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Caine stacks Patton on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Caine! Patton is trying to improve his position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Caine stands up and we're back to a striking position. Caine shoots for a takedown but Patton saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Patton closes the distance looking to clinch and Caine decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Patton's guard. Caine stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Patton swivels though and keeps the full guard. Patton is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Patton working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Caine doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Caine manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Patton looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Caine passes into side control.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Patton wants to control but Caine postures up. Caine works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head. Patton tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Caine wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Caine trying to control the action but Patton is working from the bottom. Patton takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
That's four minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Patton is trying to improve his position. Patton is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Caine rushes Patton and presses him up against the cage. Caine drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Patton gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Patton jumps guard but Caine stands there with Patton around his waist. Patton gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Craig Patton has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Caine pulls guard effortlessly. Patton drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Caine dives on top into guard.
And that's the end of the fight! Chris Caine comfortably won the final round on my scorecard. Well Caine has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
