PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Loka Shawn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Phillip Merki (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Shawn might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Argy Bargy. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Loka Shawn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Phillip Merki!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Cecil Peabody and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Merki feints and as Shawn raises his hands in defense, Merki changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Merki forces his way into half guard.

Merki is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Shawn has managed to free his arm - good work.
Shawn won't allow Merki to pass to mount.
Shawn wants to improve his position but Merki is controlling well.
Merki wants to free his trapped foot but Shawn is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Shawn slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Merki is pushing down on Shawn's leg trying to pass to half guard. Shawn is fighting to maintain full guard but Merki has managed to sneak the leg through.

Merki is trying to work for a kimura but Shawn is defending well.
Shawn is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Merki tries to pass the half guard into mount. Shawn knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Merki prevents Shawn from improving his position.
Merki works his way into side control.
Shawn tries to improve position but can't.
Merki tries to advance to mount but Shawn denies him.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Nice defenses there by Merki.
Nice takedown defense from Shawn. No joy for Merki on that attempt.
Merki shoots for a takedown but Shawn saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Phillip Merki seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Shawn slaps away a takedown attempt from Merki, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Loka Shawn has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Phillip Merki.
Merki shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Shawn sprawls well. Shawn wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Merki gets slowly back to his feet.

Merki takes a jab right on the kisser.

A left and a right from Shawn both land. Nice combination.


It looks like Phillip Merki has been cut.
Shawn pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Shawn connects with a right hand. Merki shakes it off.

Shawn pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Shawn cracks a nice hook into Merki's ribs.
Shawn throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Loka Shawn is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Shawn throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Merki sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Shawn moves in looking to clinch but Merki pushes him off.
Merki shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Shawn sprawls well. Shawn wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Merki gets slowly back to his feet.
Shawn misses with an uppercut. Merki saw that one coming.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Loka Shawn dominated that round.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Merki shoots in for a double leg but Shawn sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Merki drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Merki passes Shawn's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Shawn is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Shawn tries to reverse the position but Merki maintains control.
Merki fails to move to back control.

Merki is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Shawn has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Merki is breathing heavily.
Merki prevents Shawn from getting the reversal.
Merki moves to take his opponent's back.
Merki doesn't have the hooks in and Shawn manages to turn into his guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Shawn would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Shawn trying to control the position from guard on top but Merki is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Merki is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Shawn got a little sloppy there for a moment and Merki has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Shawn has managed to get both his arms back between Merki's legs - danger averted.

Shawn wants to stand but Merki has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Shawn throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Merki works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Shawn wants to stand but Merki is controlling his posture from full guard.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Merki tries for a takedown but Shawn sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Shawn moves into the clinch.
Merki jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Shawn walks away with a smile on his face. Merki gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Shawn throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Merki on the side of the head.
Merki tries to score a power double leg takedown but Shawn sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Merki somewhat.
Shawn stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Shawn wants it to stay on the feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Phillip Merki showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!



Merki fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Shawn sprawls well initially but Merki persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Merki wants to work for an arm triangle but Shawn is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Shawn is pressing down on Merki's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Merki is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Shawn is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Shawn has escaped and now he's on top!

Merki working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Shawn doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Shawn manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Merki takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Merki looking for a guillotine here but Shawn defends easily.
Merki avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Shawn has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Merki is proving hard to escape from.

Merki isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Shawn stacks Merki on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Shawn!
Merki is not content to let Shawn control the position.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Merki dodges the ground and pound from Shawn.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Shawn lands a nice looking body shot.
Shawn will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Horrible takedown by Merki or perhaps it was just good defense by Shawn which made him look bad.
Shawn misses with a straight right.

Shawn looks to land a right hand but Merki moved out of range.

Merki looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Shawn!
Shawn tries to buck Merki off but he can't manage it.

Merki has control of Shawn's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Shawn regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Shawn is controlling an arm, preventing Merki from taking his back. Although keeping him in mount is no better to be honest.
Shawn is working to get back to half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Merki is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Shawn has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Shawn!

I would just about give that final round to Phillip Merki.
