PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Cao Cao (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jukko Tupola (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Cao Cao!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jukko Tupola!
The judges for this bout are Taro Takaoka, Shirou Masuda and Tatsuya Matsuyama.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Tupola stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Cao.
Tupola shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Cao but Cao pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Tupola has Cao up against the cage in a clinch.
Tupola should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Cao tries to land a knee to the head but Tupola blocks with his arms.

Cao breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Cao!

Cao gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Tupola wants to control from the top but Cao keeps moving.
Cao is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Tupola is controlling him.
Tupola chips away with some ground and pound.
Tupola with a nice head shot there.
Tupola has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Tupola stops Cao from standing up.
Cao keeping moving, preventing Tupola from controlling successfully.

Tupola drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Cao dives on top into guard.
Tupola has a closed guard, preventing Cao from standing up.
Cao lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Cao stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Tupola swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Tupola seems keen to control Cao's posture.

Cao wanted to stand there but Tupola had control of the position.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Tupola looking for a sweep. Not yet Tupola, not yet.
Cao has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Tupola is proving hard to escape from.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Cao accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Cao gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

and Tupola counters with a nice double leg into guard.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Cao is looking to escape.
Tupola wants to control but Cao is keeping him busy.
Tupola uses his free foot to push down on Cao's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Cao.

Cao tries to reverse the position but Tupola maintains control.

Cao knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Tupola on the ground.

Cao is trying to stand up here but Tupola is controlling him well.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Cao manages to get to full guard.
Cao is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Tupola is controlling him.
Tupola won't allow Cao to sweep him here.
Cao lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Tupola!
Tupola is trying to escape the mount.
Cao postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Tupola looks a forlorn figure.

A close round but Jukko Tupola will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Cao gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Tupola counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Tupola changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Cao fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Cao moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Tupola had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Cao is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Tupola Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Cao's back instead.
Tupola is throwing punches to the body, looking to soften Cao up.

Tupola is looking for the choke from the back position but Cao is controlling his hands well.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for leaving it all in the cage!

Tupola has his opponent trapped and is landing shots. Not a good position for Cao.
Cao is covering up but some of the strikes from Tupola are getting through and doing damage.
Tupola is working the ground and pound here and the referee is taking a close look at Cao. He must escape soon or this one will be stopped.
Tupola cracks Cao with a big shot to body and one to the head - really punishing Cao from the back mount here, looking to soften him up.

Tupola connects with a series of strikes and the referee is calling for Cao to escape the position.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.

and Tupola counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Cao bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Cao scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.

and Tupola counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.

and Tupola holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Tupola can't get the takedown.
Cao crunches a lovely knee into Tupola's ribcage.

Cao breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Tupola circles away from the clinch attempt.
Tupola ducks under a wild hook from Cao.

Cao tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
Tupola goes for a takedown attempt but Cao pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Cao Cao seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Tupola manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Cao manages to get himself to full guard.

Tupola postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Cao is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Tupola, into his guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jukko Tupola showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!

Cao throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Tupola.

and Tupola counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Cao wants to stand and escape but Tupola is having none of it.
Tupola passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Cao stops Tupola from passing to mount.

Tupola thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Tupola tries to move into full mount but can't pass Cao's legs.
Cao is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Tupola has just dragged him back down to the mat.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Tupola tries for a kimura but Cao is defending well.

Tupola is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Cao looks calm but he's in trouble here. Tupola gets his head over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Cao is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Tupola lets go of the hold and Cao can pop his arm back in it's socket.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:23 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Jukko Tupola!
