PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Tomas Rios (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Phil Poison (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rios comes to the cage accompanied by Ate o fim. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Tomas Rios!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Phil Poison!
The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, Steve Smith and Ian Loll.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rios tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Rios.
Poison changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Rios tries to avoid it but Poison manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Rios to the ground. Rios escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Poison fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Rios avoids it really well and circles away.
Some wild striking there from Rios.
Rios lands a head kick. Poison smiles back at him and beckons him forward.


It looks like Phil Poison has been cut.

Rios moves into the clinch.

Rios pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Rios throws a sloppy head kick and Poison moves out of range easily.
Poison fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Tomas Rios has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Phil Poison.
Rios keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

and Poison counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Rios!

Poison controlling the pace for now.

Poison stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet.

Poison takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.

Poison shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Rios is breathing heavily.

Poison looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Poison wants to control the pace but Rios is squirming around nicely.

Rios trying desperately to get to his feet.

Rios wants to hold on but Poison pushes him away.

Poison has control of Rios's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Rios regains control of the situation pretty easily.

Rios holds on for dear life, controlling Poison's posture momentarily.

Rios is looking to get to half guard.

Poison goes for an armbar but Rios turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Rios.
Poison controls Rios momentarily but Rios frees himself.
Rios wanted to stand there but Poison had control of the position.

Poison is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Rios defends well.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Poison can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Rios controls the pace.
Rios trying to control the position from guard on top but Poison is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Poison wants to stand up but Rios is controlling him.

Rios stands and steps away. Poison gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Poison shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Rios defends it nicely.
Tomas Rios seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Rios scores with a takedown into Poison's guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Poison takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.
Rios pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Rios throws a sloppy head kick and Poison moves out of range easily.

and Rios counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Poison looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Rios wants to control from the top but Poison keeps moving.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Poison had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Rios is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Poison Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Rios's back instead.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Poison sinks in the hooks and is looking for the choke. He's got it! Rios taps out!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:19 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Phil Poison!
