PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jesse Nansen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joel Freeman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Nansen comes to the cage accompanied by Enter The Dragon. Freeman is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Time to Pretend. Joel Freeman is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Jesse Nansen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of London, Joel Freeman!
The judges for this bout are James Atkins, Andrew Berry and Richard Clark.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Freeman has closed the distance and engaged Nansen in a clinch.
Nansen misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Freeman.
Nansen misses with a hook from the clinch.
Nansen can't break the clinch.
Freeman connects with a nasty looking knee right to Nansen's face.


It looks like Jesse Nansen has been cut.
Freeman trying to land knees to the body.
Freeman lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.
Nansen misses with a short punch on the inside.
A head punch on the inside from Freeman fails to land.
A frustrated look appears on Nansen's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Freeman gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.

Freeman escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Freeman has closed the distance and engaged Nansen in a clinch.
Nansen blocks an elbow strike from Freeman.
Nansen tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
Freeman lands a damaging elbow.


Nansen is rocked!

Freeman pulls guard effortlessly.
Nansen won't allow Freeman to sweep him here.
Nansen tries to free his leg and advance position but Freeman is retaining full guard.
Nansen trying to control the position from guard on top but Freeman is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Freeman will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Freeman moves in looking to clinch but Nansen pushes him off.

Freeman shoots in and bounces Nansen off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Freeman throwing strikes from guard but Nansen blocks nicely.
Freeman throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Nansen works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Nansen looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Freeman fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Nansen, pushing him back against the cage.

Nansen tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Freeman just stands there and leans against the cage.
Nansen tries to break free but Freeman pushes him back against the cage.
Nansen lands with a right to the head.
Freeman fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Nansen wants to break free but Freeman has control.
Freeman prevents Nansen from breaking the clinch.
Nansen tries a body shot but Freeman blocks it.

Freeman breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Freeman closes the distance and clinches up with Nansen, looking for a takedown. Freeman pushes Nansen against the cage but Nansen circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Nansen tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Freeman closes the distance and clinches.

Freeman's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Freeman wants to clinch.
Joel Freeman seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Nansen scores with a jab to the head.

Freeman looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Nansen is trying to stand back up but Freeman is controlling him
Nansen tries to get to full guard but Freeman has control of the leg.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Freeman lands a nice short elbow.

Freeman with the ground and pound but Nansen uses the opportunity to regain guard.

That's time! Nansen's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Nansen is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace.
Nansen can't break the clinch.
Freeman putting his Muay Thai to good use. He has Nansen in a tight clinch and is doing some damage with knees to the body.
Freeman throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Nansen blocks it with crossed arms.
With the fighters clinched against the cage, Freeman creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.
Freeman is trying to drag Nansen to the mat but Nansen just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Nansen is working for takedown but Freeman is calmly controlling the position for now.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Nansen is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.
Nansen throws a punch but it's blocked by Freeman.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Freeman gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Nansen regains guard.
Nansen looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Freeman puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

Nansen is trying to control but Freeman passes into side control!
Both fighters take a look at the clock.
Nansen is looking to reverse the position.
Nansen takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
Freeman is looking to take a break and control but Nansen is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Nansen is pushing Freeman's head away, looking to escape. Freeman manages to hold on to the position though.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Freeman has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Nansen is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Freeman's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.

Nansen is looking to improve his position.
Nansen avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Freeman.
Nansen wants to control but Freeman is keeping busy.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Nansen tries for a takedown but Freeman sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

so Freeman counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Nansen pulls Freeman in close to his closed guard and prevents Freeman from doing any damage or advancing position.
Nansen has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Freeman has passed into side control.
You can see the frustration on Nansen's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Nansen tries to control but Freeman manages to take his back.
Nansen tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Joel Freeman showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Freeman tries to close the distance and clinch but Nansen swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Nansen doesn't manage to clinch there - Freeman circles away.
Freeman throws a head kick but Nansen moves out of range.
Freeman tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Nansen counters with a shoot takedown. Freeman fights it but they end up in guard.
Freeman is looking to stand up but Nansen isn't so interested in that idea.

Nansen lands an elbow that stopped Freeman in his tracks for a moment.
Nansen pushes Freeman back against the cage and unloads with a body punch.
Freeman throws a head punch that misses.

Nansen drags the fight down to the ground.
Nansen looking to hit a scissor sweep but Freeman is one step ahead there.
Freeman trying to control the position from guard on top but Nansen is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Nansen is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Freeman uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Nansen fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Nansen shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Freeman as he jumps to the side.

Freeman rushes Nansen and presses him up against the cage.
Freeman tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Nansen avoids it.

Nansen can't get the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jesse Nansen. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Freeman lands an elbow just above Nansen 's eye.
Freeman is pushing Nansen up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
Nansen is trying to stall.
Nansen is trying to break the clinch but Freeman has him pressed against the cage.
Nansen lands with a light punch inside.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Freeman has Nansen pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Nansen manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Nansen tries to break the clinch but Freeman is controlling the position.
Nansen is trying to drag Freeman to the mat but Freeman just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Nansen pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Nansen wants to clinch but Freeman slips to the side

and Freeman counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

Nansen is trying is best to control the position here.

Nansen pushes Freeman off and gets back to his feet.
Jesse Nansen has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Freeman misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Joel Freeman is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Nansen throws a lazy head kick

so Freeman counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

I would just about give that final round to Joel Freeman.
Well Freeman has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
