PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Kayaki Chonin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Devon Garcia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chonin comes into the arena with Fedor Entrance Song blaring out of the sound system. Kayaki Chonin has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 6 - 0, fighting out of London, Kayaki Chonin!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Devon Garcia!
The judges for this bout are James Atkins, Chris Edwards and Daniel Bishop.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Chonin wants to clinch up but Garcia keeps it at a distance.

Garcia drives through and clinches with Chonin against the cage.
Chonin is trying to drag Garcia to the mat but Garcia just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Chonin breaks from the clinch.
Chonin tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Garcia counters with a nice double leg into side control. Chonin won't be happy with that.
Chonin sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Chonin is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Garcia stalling.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Chonin has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Garcia is working away from the top position though.
Garcia tries to pass to full mount but Chonin defends it.
Garcia trying to control from Chonin's half guard. Chonin has other ideas though and has regained full guard.
Chonin is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Chonin is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Chonin shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Garcia counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Chonin's guard now.

Garcia trying to control the position from guard on top but Chonin is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Chonin looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Chonin is breathing heavily.
Garcia controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Garcia must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Garcia got a little sloppy there for a moment and Chonin has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Garcia has managed to get both his arms back between Chonin's legs - danger averted.
Chonin controls Garcia momentarily but Garcia frees himself.
Garcia would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Chonin looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Garcia stands and throws Chonin's legs to the side, diving into side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Chonin is looking for a sweep.
Garcia working away.
Chonin being controlled for a moment.
Garcia wants to lay and pray for a moment but Chonin keeps working.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Devon Garcia dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Garcia darts in and clinches Chonin up against the cage.
Both guys are working to get underhooks.
Garcia prevents Chonin from breaking the clinch.
Chonin drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Garcia gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Chonin tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Garcia just stands there and leans against the cage.
Garcia digs a right hand into Chonin's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Chonin's gas tank.

Garcia pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Chonin is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Garcia.
A head kick by Chonin misses

and Garcia counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Garcia manages to break the clinch.
Garcia moves out of range as Chonin strikes.
Chonin shoots and misses

and Garcia counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kayaki Chonin. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Garcia avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Garcia controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Garcia lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Garcia trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Devon Garcia has got the better of the ground game so far.

Chonin looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Garcia passes into side control.
Check out the look on Garcia's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Chonin is trying to improve his position.
You can see the frustration on Chonin's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Chonin tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Chonin is not content to let Garcia control the position.
Chonin is trying to control Garcia's posture but Garcia avoids it.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Garcia slips a straight right by Chonin.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Garcia avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Chonin jabbing away but nothing is landing.
A lazy left from Chonin finds it's target.


It looks like Devon Garcia has been cut.
Garcia misses with a jab, cross combination.
Chonin shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Garcia but Garcia pushes him off and we're back to square one.
The crowd cheers as Chonin lands an impressive looking overhand right. Garcia doesn't seem phased though.

Garcia prevents Chonin from moving into mount.
Garcia manages to get back to half guard.
Garcia has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Chonin is working away from the top position though.

Chonin seems to be working for a kimura but Garcia defends the submission attempt.
Chonin is keen to just control but Garcia is a slippery customer.

Chonin is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Garcia wants to get back to full guard.

Garcia is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Chonin pulls his head out easily.
Chonin is trying to control. Garcia wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Devon Garcia showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

That's time! Chonin's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Chonin shoots for a takedown but Garcia saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Chonin fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Garcia manages to break the clinch.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Garcia misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Chonin throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Chonin shoots for a takedown but Garcia saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Garcia has managed to clinch.
Chonin takes a knee right on the jaw!
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.

Garcia breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Chonin tries to land a front kick but Garcia steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.

Garcia feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Chonin has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Garcia should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Chonin has tightened it up now! Garcia should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!
