Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Ashton Bell! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Bill Pope! The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Eliza Hachem and Winston Howard.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Excellent takedown into side control there by Pope. Pope tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Pope has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Pope working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Pope wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Bell, who protects the arm well. Bell is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Pope tries for a kimura but Bell is defending well. Bell on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Bell tries to get out of the position. Pope working away.
That's one minute gone in the round. Bell tries to buck Pope off but Pope is having none of it. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Bell is working hard here to advance position. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Pope drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Bell tries to bench press Pope off him but Pope keeps the position. Pope prevents Bell from escaping the position. Pope tries for a kimura but Bell is defending well. Pope looks gassed! You can see the frustration on Bell's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Pope looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. You can see the frustration on Bell's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Pope swings around for an armbar but Bell sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Pope's guard. Pope keeping moving, preventing Bell from controlling successfully. Bell wants to pass the guard but Pope is keeping the position. Bell controlling from the top position. Pope is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Bell is aware though and is defending well.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Pope is looking for a triangle but Bell pushes his legs off easily.
Bell is in close to Pope's body, working some short punches and elbows. Bell stands and steps away. Pope gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game. Bell closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Pope to the mat! Pope manages to get full guard. Bell missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Pope trying to keep a closed guard but Bell is proving a slippery customer.
Bell working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Pope's head. Bell has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Pope to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Bell is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Pope pulls down on the head and he's put Bell to sleep! This one is all over!
