Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Matthew Newell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jack Payn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Matthew Newell! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jack Payn! The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Chris Downing and Stewart Dunkirk.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Payn takes a head kick and shrugs it off.
Newell lands a slapping body shot.
Payn tries to score a power double leg takedown but Newell sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Payn somewhat. Payn shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Newell defends it nicely. Payn keeps the fight on the outside. Newell misses with the combination.
Newell stuffs the takedown attempt from Payn. Payn gets slowly back to his feet. Matthew Newell has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jack Payn.
That's one minute gone in the round. Newell keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Payn fails with a takedown attempt. Newell throws out a leg kick but Payn moves out of range and Newell only half commits. Payn will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Good exchange - Payn coming out on top. Payn showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Newell.
Newell looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Newell wants to lay and pray for a moment but Payn keeps working. Newell not doing much here.
Payn is trying to get back to full guard. Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Newell in particular looking to stall. Payn looking for submissions off his back.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Newell tries to pass to full mount but Payn defends it. Payn is looking for a sweep. Newell is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Newell is trying to control the action in half guard but Payn is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Payn won't allow Newell to pass to mount.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Newell scoring well with a low kick there.
Payn fails with the takedown and Newell counters with a single leg into guard. Payn didn't expect that. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Payn looks gassed! Newell got a little sloppy there for a moment and Payn has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Newell has managed to get both his arms back between Payn's legs - danger averted. Newell stays in close to Payn's body and controls the position. Newell seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Payn for as long as he can get away with. Newell wants to pass the guard but Payn is keeping the position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Newell lands a couple of digs. Newell stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Payn swivels though and keeps the full guard. Payn striking off his back but it's not causing Newell any problems. Newell knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Payn on the ground. Newell trying to control but Payn is working from the bottom. Newell has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Newell controls from within his opponent's guard. Payn keeping moving, preventing Newell from controlling successfully.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Newell clinches up against the cage. Newell is pressed up against the cage. Payn has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Newell down to the mat. Newell avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance. Newell wants to clinch up but Payn keeps it at a distance. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Newell works a leg free and moves into half guard. Newell with a momentary lay and pray from half guard. Payn is refusing to be controlled, as Newell sits in half guard. Payn actively working from the bottom here. Payn looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Payn wants to improve his position but Newell is controlling well.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Newell will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Newell drives through with a takedown into guard. Newell sitting in guard here, content to control. Newell advances position into side control! Newell is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position. Newell trying to control the action but Payn is working from the bottom. Newell has knee on belly and moves into mount. Payn tries to reverse the position but Newell maintains control. Newell controlling the pace for now. Newell looking to control but Payn is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Payn tries to reverse the position but Newell maintains control. Newell controlling from the full mount. Newell has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
The referee stands the fighters back up. Matthew Newell just wasn't active enough from the dominant position. Newell scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction. Newell tries to clinch but Payn moves out of range.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Payn shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Newell counters with a left and a right that stings Payn. Payn misses with a takedown attempt and Newell connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. Newell shoots in and bounces Payn off the cage to secure the takedown into guard. Newell trying to control the position from guard on top but Payn is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Newell is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Payn looking for a sweep. Not yet Payn, not yet. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matthew Newell overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Payn is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Newell has managed to free his arm - good work. Newell is trying to get back to full guard. Newell is controlling Payn's trapped leg to prevent Payn from advancing to side control. Newell gets full guard. Payn is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Newell controls Payn momentarily but Payn frees himself. Payn takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Newell trying to control the position here.

Newell swivels though and keeps the full guard. Newell is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control. Newell keeping full guard, as Payn tries to pass. Newell controlling the position. Newell looking for a guillotine here but Payn defends easily.

That's four minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Payn had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Newell is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Payn Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Newell's back instead. Matthew Newell is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Newell is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Payn gets his way!
Newell tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell! Payn prevents Newell from getting the reversal. Newell tries to hold on but Payn postures up. Payn throwing shots from mount but they're not landing. Newell wants to hold on but Payn pushes him away. Jack Payn has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
