PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Wladimir Gilkov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Stefan Edberg (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Stefan Edberg told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Wladimir Gilkov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Stefan Edberg!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Gilkov pushes Edberg up against the cage in a clinch.

Edberg manages to break the clinch.

Gilkov closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Edberg to the mat! Edberg manages to get full guard.
Gilkov trying to control the position from guard on top but Edberg is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Gilkov pushes down on Edberg's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Gilkov frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Gilkov throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Edberg because Gilkov loaded up on that one.
Gilkov has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Edberg is squirming around, avoiding Gilkov's attempts to control the action.

Gilkov sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Edberg holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Gilkov tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
Gilkov postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Edberg looks a forlorn figure.
Gilkov scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Edberg?

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Gilkov breaks from Edberg's wrist control and lands an elbow.

Gilkov looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Gilkov looking to control but Edberg is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Gilkov has hold of Edberg's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Edberg manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Gilkov is working for a guillotine from mount but Edberg frees his head quite easily.

Gilkov swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Edberg is now in Gilkov's guard. A big mistake from Gilkov there, giving up the dominant position!

Edberg avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Edberg won't allow Gilkov to sweep him here.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Gilkov has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Edberg can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Gilkov had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Edberg is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Gilkov Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Edberg's back instead.

Edberg is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Gilkov gets his way!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Edberg misses the shot to the body.

Gilkov feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Edberg really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gilkov. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Gilkov drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Edberg dives on top into guard.

Gilkov is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Edberg is aware though and is defending well.

Gilkov has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Edberg can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Gilkov has control of Edberg's left arm, preventing Edberg from doing any damage.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Gilkov is looking for a triangle but Edberg pushes his legs off easily.
Edberg must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Gilkov looking for a guillotine here but Edberg defends easily.

Gilkov pushes a forearm under Edberg's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Edberg is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!
