The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Nine uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Whelan. Nine shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Whelan sprawls well. Whelan wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Nine gets slowly back to his feet. A jab from Nine does it's job there. Whelan looks to score with a combo but nothing lands. Nine tries to clinch but Whelan is having none of it. Nine looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Nine is trying to control the action in half guard but Whelan is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Whelan on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Whelan tries to get out of the position. Whelan is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Whelan is working hard here to advance position. Whelan is trying is best to control the position here. Whelan is trying to maintain the position but Nine is very close to passing his half guard.

Nine might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Whelan kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time. Whelan is looking to get to half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Nine content just to control the position here. Nine looking to control but Whelan is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Nine controlling from mount. Nine moves to the back position. Nine controlling from the back. Whelan staying busy and making it hard for Nine to control.
Despite being in the dominant position, Resial Nine just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Whelan takes a swing at Nine's ribcage but misses. Nine fails with a takedown attempt. Nine shoots in for a double leg but Whelan sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Matthew Whelan has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Resial Nine.
That's four minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Whelan throws a left that rocks Nine and follows with a right that sends him tumbling to the canvas! Whelan dives into side control, looking to finish! Can Nine regain composure!
It looks like Resial Nine has been cut. Nine looking for a sweep but Whelan has passed into full mount! Oh no! Nine wants to control but Whelan is having none of it. Nine looks gassed! Whelan controlling the pace for now. Nine should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete. Nine really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Whelan sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it! Whelan working the ground and pound effectively.

Whelan swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Nine. Nine fails to land the takedown. Nine decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Nine content to control rather than advance. Whelan is trying to stand.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Nine slips a straight right by Whelan. Matthew Whelan is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Nine lunges at Whelan with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Whelan's hand. Whelan throws a lazy right hand but Nine sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily. Nine looks to land a right hand but Whelan moved out of range. A left and a right from Whelan both land. Nice combination.
That has opened up Resial Nine's cut even more. Whelan looks to land a right hand but Nine moved out of range. Nine fails with a takedown attempt. Whelan misses with a wild body shot.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Nine shoots in looking for a takedown. Whelan tries to sprawl out of it but Nine keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Whelan manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Matthew Whelan has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Resial Nine. The fighters circling - Whelan throws out the jab but it was never going to land. Nine cracks Whelan with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage. Nine tries to clinch but Whelan moves out of range. Nine misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Matthew Whelan is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Nine connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head. Whelan rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Nine moves out of range and avoids them all easily. Nine with a hook. Whelan tries to clinch up.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Nine dives in and grabs Whelan's left leg, looking for a takedown. Whelan pushes down on Nine's head and hops out. Nine fails to land the takedown. Whelan slips a straight right by Nine. Nine misses with a looping right. Nine connects with a nice looking jab.
A swing and a miss from Whelan. Resial Nine seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Whelan drops Nine with a left and a right! Oh, Nine is hurt - Whelan dives into side control looking to finish!
The cut above Resial Nine's eye is starting to cause him problems now.
The referee calls the doctor in to look at Resial Nine's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!
