Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Andre Payette! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Bryan Briston! The judges for this bout are Chris Edwards, William Gold and Andrew Berry.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Briston slips under a jab from Payette. Briston gets the takedown into side control. Payette tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Briston wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Payette regains half guard. Briston wants to pass to mount but Payette is defending the position. The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Briston lands a nice short elbow. Briston is keen to just control but Payette is a slippery customer. Payette wants to improve his position but Briston is controlling well.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Payette is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Briston's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Briston's back! Payette is striking from the back but Briston escapes and manages to recover to half guard. Briston is refusing to be controlled, as Payette sits in half guard. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
That's one minute gone in the round. Briston won't allow Payette to pass to mount. Payette working over Briston with some ground and pound. Briston looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. Payette not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Payette wants to take a breather but Briston is having none of it. Payette looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Briston with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Payette throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Payette winds up and cracks Briston with a swinging punch to the side of the head. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Briston can do anything to dispel that myth. Briston keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Payette is looking to advance position but Briston won't allow it.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Briston on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound. Briston is staying active underneath Payette, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Briston really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Payette. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Payette is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Briston is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. Payette has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Payette working the head and body with strikes. Payette trying to control the action but Briston is working from the bottom. Payette not landing any meaningful shots this time. Briston is looking to improve his position.
Payette is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Payette missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Payette is thwarting Briston's attempts to control the position. Payette trying to work for an americana but Briston has managed to regain full guard.
Payette trying to control the position from guard on top but Briston is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Payette might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Payette stops Briston from standing up.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Briston preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Payette is looking to work some ground and pound but Briston has wrist control. Payette postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. Payette throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Briston works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Payette won't allow Briston to get back to his feet. Payette with a flurry of punches that miss. Payette looking to pass the guard. Payette stops Briston from standing up. Payette drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Briston dives on top into guard. Payette looking to hit a scissor sweep but Briston is one step ahead there. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Andre Payette dominated that round. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.
Briston shoots for a takedown but Payette saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. A right-left combo lands from Payette.
It looks like Bryan Briston has been cut. Payette scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Payette throws a strike aimed at the side of Briston's head but Briston avoids it well. Briston is trying to improve his position. Briston prevents Payette from improving position. Briston defending against the ground and pound.
That's one minute gone in the round. Payette misses with an attempted head punch from side control. Payette wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Briston, who protects the arm well. Payette throwing ground and pound but whilst doing so, he forgets to control position and Briston works his way back to half guard. Good composure under pressure. Payette seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. Payette wants to work for an arm triangle but Briston is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Briston is not content to let Payette control the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Nice strikes from Payette there. Payette not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Briston on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound. Payette throwing shots but Briston is blocking nicely. Payette is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Briston has managed to free his arm - good work. Payette thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Payette not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Briston regains full guard. Nicely done. Briston wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Payette manages to pass to side control. Briston is breathing heavily. Briston is looking for a sweep. Payette is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Briston tries to kick Payette off but Payette keeps his base steady and stays in half guard. Payette trying to control the action but Briston is working from the bottom. Payette thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Briston's head.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Payette is working for a submission here. He's got hold of the far side arm and he's looking for a kimura. He's cranking on the arm and he's got it! Briston is tapping out! Ouch, that looked like it hurt!
