PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Steve Learmont (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Eric Cross (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Learmont comes to the cage accompanied by Voodoo Child. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Eric Cross!
The judges for this bout are Albert Achterberg, Saam Ante and Paul Aken.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Learmont swats away the attempt to clinch by Cross.

Learmont moves in looking to clinch but Cross pushes him off.
Cross throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Cross throws a head kick that Learmont semi-blocks.

and Learmont decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Cross's guard.

Learmont escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Cross gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Cross trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Learmont has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Cross can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Learmont is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Cross wants to get up but he can't break Learmont's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Learmont looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Cross wants to control from the top but Learmont keeps moving.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Cross closes the distance looking to clinch

and Learmont counters with a nice double leg into side control. Cross won't be happy with that.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Learmont is trying to get an arm triangle but Cross is defending well.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Cross moves into the clinch successfully.
Learmont is working for takedown but Cross is calmly controlling the position for now.

Cross shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Learmont pinned against the cage. Learmont gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Learmont turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Learmont manages to end up in side control.

Cross displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Learmont.
Cross tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Learmont paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Learmont keeps control of Cross as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Cross jumps guard but Learmont stands there with Cross around his waist. Cross gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Cross drops down looking for an ankle pick but Learmont pulls his leg out and moves away.

Cross lands with a nice combination. Learmont backs away looking to recover.
Learmont stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Cross.
Cross scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Learmont doesn't seem bothered though.
Cross fails with a takedown attempt.
Cross scoring well with a low kick there.
Cross shoots in but no luck this time.

Learmont is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Cross's half guard.

Learmont wants to finish this one by submission but Cross is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Learmont.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Cross misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Learmont shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Cross sprawls well. Cross wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Learmont gets slowly back to his feet.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Cross.
Eric Cross has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Steve Learmont is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Steve Learmont.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Learmont, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
