Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, D Maia! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jonh McGuff! The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, George Francis and Stewart Dunkirk.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! McGuff fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Maia avoids it really well and circles away. A telegraphed takedown attempt from McGuff is defended easily by Maia. McGuff shoots in and drives through. Maia sprawls well. D Maia has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jonh McGuff. Maia shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in McGuff's guard. Maia looking to pass the guard. McGuff is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Maia sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed McGuff's guard. Maia is trying to work for a kimura but McGuff is defending well.
That's one minute gone in the round. McGuff is in trouble now - Maia has advanced to mount! Maia has control of McGuff's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and McGuff regains control of the situation pretty easily.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Maia working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet. McGuff is trying to stand up. McGuff keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. McGuff is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position. Maia punching from mount but McGuff doing a good job of avoiding damage. Maia with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Maia is trying to control here but McGuff has managed to regain half guard.
Maia uses his free foot to push down on McGuff's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for McGuff. Maia throwing sloppy strikes, which aren't doing any damage. McGuff is squirming around, avoiding Maia's attempts to control the action.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Maia looking for a guillotine from mount but McGuff is having none of it. Maia with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Maia is breathing heavily. Maia goes for an armbar but McGuff turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from McGuff. Maia manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

That's four minutes gone in the round. Maia being controlled here, momentarily. Maia isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. McGuff stacks Maia on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by McGuff! Maia is positioning himself to get back to half guard. McGuff tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
D Maia dominated that round. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Maia shoots in and bounces McGuff off the ropes to secure the takedown into guard. Maia looking to pass the guard. Maia slips nicely into half guard. Maia moves nicely into side control. McGuff is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Maia trying to control the action but McGuff is working from the bottom. Maia working away. Maia tries to move into full mount but can't pass McGuff's legs. Maia is working hard here to advance position. Maia goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, McGuff rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Maia's guard! Nice work there by McGuff! McGuff is looking to stand up but Maia won't let him. McGuff is breathing heavily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Maia tries to land a sweep but no joy.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. McGuff with a lazy takedown attempt and Maia counters with a nice double leg into guard. Maia stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. McGuff swivels though and keeps the full guard. Maia sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed McGuff's guard. Maia tries to pass to full mount but McGuff defends it. Maia frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount. Maia content just to control the position here.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Maia looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead. McGuff defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Maia. Maia trying to control but he's not successful this time. Maia working for a submission but McGuff is keeping him at bay. Maia throwing strikes here but McGuff is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Maia working for a submission but McGuff is keeping him at bay. Maia working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet. McGuff is squirming around, avoiding Maia's attempts to control the action. Maia working from mount. He moves in close and looks like he might be going for an arm triangle... He's hopped off to the side and he's transitioned into an Anaconda choke. McGuff turning a nasty shade of purple. He's refusing to tap but he's gone! He's out! The ref rips Maia off and cradles McGuff's limp body as Maia celebrates with his corner.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:58 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Anaconda Choke). D Maia!
