PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Fabio le Banner (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tran Do Di (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Fabio le Banner!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Tran Do Di!
The judges for this bout are Konstantin Menshow, Vladimir Khabensky and Dmitry Maklakov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Di drives through with a takedown into guard.
le Banner throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Di pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. le Banner is keeping the position for now.
le Banner throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
le Banner knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Di on the ground.
le Banner trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!

le Banner throws his legs up looking for a submission but Di uses it to pass to side control.
le Banner gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!

Di is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. le Banner can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Di goes for an armbar but he's not got it… le Banner turns into him and now he's in Di's guard.

le Banner loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Di preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

Di looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Di looking to hit a scissor sweep but le Banner is one step ahead there.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
le Banner trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
le Banner wants to control from the top but Di keeps moving.
le Banner postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

le Banner is looking to work some ground and pound but Di has wrist control.

Di is looking for a triangle but le Banner pushes his legs off easily.

Di is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
le Banner trying to control the position from guard on top but Di is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as le Banner accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Di is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and le Banner defends well.

le Banner drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and le Banner jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

le Banner stands up over Di, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
le Banner connects with a couple of short punches.

Di has his foot on le Banner's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. le Banner works his way back into a safe position though.
le Banner works over Di with some ground and pound from guard.
Di keeping moving, preventing le Banner from controlling successfully.
le Banner working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
le Banner will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
le Banner with a flurry of punches that miss.

Di looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Di not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Di looking for a sweep. Not yet Di, not yet.
le Banner throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Di works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
le Banner misses with a takedown attempt

and Di counters with a nice double leg into side control. le Banner won't be happy with that.

Di tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
le Banner gets back to half guard.

Di is looking for submissions but instead, le Banner has regained full guard.
Di preventing the sweep.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tran Do Di dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Di keeps the fight on the outside.

Excellent takedown into side control there by le Banner.
le Banner throwing strikes but missing, from side control.
Di manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Di perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
le Banner wants to control but Di is keeping busy.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Di is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Tran Do Di has got the better of the ground game so far.
Di is looking to take a break and control but le Banner is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
le Banner wants to control but Di is keeping busy.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
le Banner shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Di pinned against the cage. Di gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
The fight stays on the outside here - le Banner looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Di fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. le Banner sprawls well initially but Di persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
le Banner throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
Di blocks the strikes from le Banner.

Di is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Di is looking to advance position but le Banner won't allow it.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
le Banner is trying to control but can't.
le Banner is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Di trying to pass the guard but le Banner defending well.
The fighters are battling for position here. le Banner manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Di pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. le Banner is keeping the position for now.
le Banner doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
le Banner is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Di slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Di had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. le Banner is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Di Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take le Banner's back instead.

Di has his opponent's back and is working for the choke.
le Banner tries to break free.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
le Banner tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
Di wants to control the pace but le Banner is squirming around nicely.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Tran Do Di will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's time! Back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


le Banner throws a right hand that Di ducks under and follows up with a left that Di also avoids with ease.
Fabio le Banner is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

le Banner closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Di tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. le Banner just stands there and leans against the cage.

Di stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. le Banner swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Di trying to control but le Banner is working from the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Di has gone for a leg lock! le Banner slips out almost immediately though and dives into Di's guard.
Di is trying to keep le Banner in close.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

le Banner trying to control but Di is working from the bottom.

Di looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

le Banner scores with a decent looking elbow strike.

Di has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but le Banner can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
le Banner postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Di is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and le Banner defends well.

le Banner in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Di is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Di working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. le Banner doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. le Banner manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
le Banner tries to close the distance and clinch up but Di swats him away and circles back towards the center.
le Banner misses with a wild combination.

and Di counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Di wants to control from the top but le Banner keeps moving.
le Banner keeping full guard, as Di tries to pass.

Di trying to control but le Banner is working from the bottom.

Di is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Fabio le Banner.
I think Di has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
