The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Yamaguchi scores with a takedown into Sonni's guard. Sonni keeping full guard, as Yamaguchi tries to pass. Yamaguchi controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Sonni working a defensive guard here.
Sonni is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Yamaguchi is controlling him. Sonni really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Yamaguchi. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Sonni wants to sweep but no luck. Sonni not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Yamaguchi is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position. Yamaguchi's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
That's one minute gone in the round. Yamaguchi sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Sonni's guard. Yamaguchi is pressing down on Sonni's thigh, looking to free his foot. Sonni is holding on for now. Yamaguchi is working hard here to advance position. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Yamaguchi seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Sonni does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Sonni is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Yamaguchi trying to control the action but Sonni is working from the bottom. Yamaguchi in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Sonni tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Yamaguchi!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:34 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Yoshi Yamaguchi! Yoshi Yamaguchi retains his welterweight title!
