PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Piston Honda (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Timmy Tank (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Timmy Tank will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Piston Honda!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Timmy Tank!
The judges for this bout are Hirohito Nitta, Sosuke Kotani and Shigeki Sano.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Tank lands a two punch combo.
Tank misses with a two punch combination.
Tank keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Honda tries to keep at a distance but Tank has taken the fight into the clinch.

Tank drags the fight down to the ground.

Tank is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Honda wants to pass the guard but Tank is keeping the position.
Honda stands and throws Tank's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Tank tries to escape but Honda is in control.

Honda tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Honda tries to move to full mount but Tank actually manages to regain half guard.
Honda tries to pass the half guard into mount. Tank knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Tank wants to control but Honda is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Tank is defending against the submission attempts here by Honda.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Honda is breathing heavily.

Honda is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Tank is just riding it out for now. Honda eventually gives up the hold.
Tank really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Honda. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Tank manages to escape and get back to his feet!
Tank throws a right and a left that Honda avoids nicely.
Tank keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Honda takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Honda tries to check the leg kick but that clearly hurt him.

Tank moves into the clinch.
Honda is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Tank pulls him back up using the underhooks.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Piston Honda. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Tank manages to break the clinch.

A nice leg kick lands there from Tank.
Tank misses with the combination.
Tank cracks Honda with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Tank connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Tank scores with a nice body kick.

Tank rushes Honda and presses him up against the ropes.
Tank throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges.

Tank escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Honda tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Tank swivels and escapes.

Tank closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Tank lands in his opponent's guard.
Tank trying to control the position from guard on top but Honda is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Tank wants to stand but Honda has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Honda throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Tank has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Honda is proving hard to escape from.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Timmy Tank dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Honda shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Tank counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Tank.
Tank prevents a takedown attempt there.

Tank tightens his grip and picks Honda up, before dumping him to the ground. Honda manages to land in guard.

Honda has his foot on Tank's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Tank works his way back into a safe position though.

Tank stands up from Honda's guard - Tank perhaps looking for a knockout.
Honda shoots and misses
and Tank counters with a left and a right that stings Honda.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Piston Honda. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Tank lands a slapping body shot.
Honda gets cracked there but stands up to it.
A right-left combo lands from Tank.

Tank closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Tank tries to stand but Honda is controlling his head.

Tank has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Tank feints and then cracks Honda's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Honda down.
Honda doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Tank counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Tank.

Tank successfully pulls guard.
Tank looking to hit a scissor sweep but Honda is one step ahead there.

Tank is edging up against the ropes. He's using the ropes to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Tank pulls guard.
Tank is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Honda is controlling him.
Honda advances to half guard.

Honda is working for a kimura but Tank is defending it quite comfortably.

Honda is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Tank is just riding it out for now. Honda eventually gives up the hold.
Honda tries to pass the half guard into mount. Tank knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Honda passes to side control.

Honda thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Honda is trying to get an arm triangle but Tank is defending well.
Tank is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the ropes but Honda has just dragged him back down to the mat.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Tank is trying to improve his position.
Tank is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Honda asserts his dominance and retains side control.
Tank is looking for a sweep.
Honda tries to advance to mount but Tank denies him.
Tank is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Honda avoids a punch combination nicely.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Timmy Tank showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! And we move into the final round!


Honda tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Tank counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Honda is trying to get back to full guard.
Honda avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Tank.
Tank wants to stand up but Honda has a hold of him and won't allow it.
Honda slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Honda has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Tank can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Honda has a closed guard, preventing Tank from standing up.
Honda is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Tank trying to control the position from guard on top but Honda is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Tank avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Tank trying to control but Honda is working from the bottom.

Tank got a little sloppy there for a moment and Honda has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Tank has managed to get both his arms back between Honda's legs - danger averted.
Tank wants to get up but he can't break Honda's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Honda is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Honda moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
A nice combination there by Tank.

Tank looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Tank wants to get up but he can't break Honda's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Honda looking to hit a scissor sweep but Tank is one step ahead there.
Tank trying to stand up but can't free himself from Honda's guard.

Tank must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Honda is working an open guard so Tank takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Tank shoots in and bounces Honda off the ropes to secure the takedown into guard.
Timmy Tank has got the better of the ground game so far.
Tank wants to stand but Honda has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Honda is looking for a triangle but Tank pushes his legs off easily.
Tank trying to stand up but can't free himself from Honda's guard.

Tank gets to his feet. Honda looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Piston Honda has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Tank lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.

Tank looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Honda!
Honda is desperately trying to improve his position but Tank has a good base and remains in mount.

And that's the end of the fight!
Timmy Tank comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Tank has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
