The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Pearson throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Cottrell was covering up waiting for the punch and Pearson finishes the takedown easily into guard. Pearson pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Cottrell is keeping the position for now. Cottrell is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Cottrell working a defensive guard here.
Pearson is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Pearson looking to pass the guard. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Pearson looking to sit in guard and control but Cottrell gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Pearson keeping moving, preventing Cottrell from controlling successfully.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Pearson wants to control from the top but Cottrell keeps moving. Pearson is really struggling to control Cottrell but he's trying to hold on to the position.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Cottrell doesn't succeed with the takedown and Pearson counters with a nice double leg into side control. Cottrell won't be happy with that. Pearson is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Cottrell knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Cottrell sitting in guard, not really doing much. Cottrell stands up and waves to Pearson to follow him. Cottrell slips a jab and a cross from Pearson.
Cottrell doesn't succeed with the takedown and Pearson decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Cottrell's guard.

Cottrell can't keep his opponent in guard - Pearson advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Pearson looking to pass the half guard. Not this time. Pearson is working hard here to advance position. Pearson is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Cottrell sees it coming and defends easily. Cottrell has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Pearson is working away from the top position though. Pearson is trying to work for a kimura but Cottrell is defending well.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Cottrell makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Cottrell. Cottrell keeping moving, preventing Pearson from controlling successfully. Pearson has gone for a leg lock! Cottrell slips out almost immediately though and dives into Pearson's guard. Cottrell controls from within his opponent's guard. Pearson looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Nathan Pearson dominated that second round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Pearson tries to hold on but Cottrell pushes him away. Cottrell with the ground and pound from mount. Pearson is looking to get to half guard. Cottrell avoids the attempt from Pearson to control.

And he's not even managing to do that successfully. Pearson tries to hold on but Cottrell pushes him away. Pearson is trying to reverse the position but instead Cottrell has taken his back - oops! Pearson is really stuck here.
Nathan Pearson is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Nathan Pearson overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Nick Cottrell has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Nathan Pearson. Well Pearson has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win...
