PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Sean Sherk (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Marcus Davis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Davis tries to clinch there but Sherk circles away.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Davis is defended easily by Sherk.
Sherk closes the distance looking to clinch

and Davis moves into the clinch.

Sherk gets control of Davis's arms and successfully pulls guard. Sherk will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Sherk is trying to control the position but Davis postures up.
Sherk is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Davis advances position into side control!
Sherk is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Davis asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Davis goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Sherk has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Davis but great work by Sherk.

The ground and pound from Sherk seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Davis tries to buck Sherk off but Sherk is having none of it.
Sherk works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sherk scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Davis to see if he's OK.

Sherk is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Davis has escaped the position, nice work there.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sherk wants to control but Davis is keeping him busy.

Davis gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Sherk knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Davis on the ground.
Sherk prevents Davis from standing back up.
Sherk seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Davis does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Sherk scores a takedown into full mount!
Davis looks gassed!
Davis is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position.
Davis wants to control but Sherk is having none of it.

Sherk goes for an armbar but Davis turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Davis.
Sherk thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

Sherk is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Sherk not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Davis trying to control the position from guard on top but Sherk is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Sherk has his foot on Davis's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Davis works his way back into a safe position though.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Sherk wants to control the position but Davis says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sean Sherk dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Sherk throws a sloppy head kick and Davis moves out of range easily.

and Davis counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Sherk!
Sherk tries to lock up and control but Davis gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Davis can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Sherk is looking to escape.
Sherk swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.
Davis wants to control the pace but Sherk is squirming around nicely.

Davis misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

Davis is giving the impression that he's looking to ground and pound but he switches suddenly into a beautiful far side armbar! Sherk is forced to tap! Great finish!
