PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Simon Standa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Aidan Conway (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Simon Standa!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Aidan Conway!
The judges for this bout are Chad Campbell, Anthony Taglia and Bruno Lombardi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Conway shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Standa is trying to defend but Conway finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Conway trying to control the action but Standa is working from the bottom.
Standa trying to control but Conway postures up.
Conway is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Standa keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Standa is defending against the submission attempts here by Conway.
Conway wants to free his trapped foot but Standa is holding on for dear life with his legs.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Conway shoots for a double leg takedown but Standa sprawls well. He's pushed Conway's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Conway gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Conway tries to score a body lock takedown but Standa shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Standa looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.

Conway tightens his grip and picks Standa up, before dumping him to the ground. Standa manages to land in guard.
Conway postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Standa is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
Standa looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Conway tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Standa just stands there and leans against the cage.

Conway tries to score a body lock takedown but Standa shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

and Conway holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Conway keeps control of Standa as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Conway tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Standa gets underhooks to prevent Conway's takedown attempt.
Standa wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Conway has him pressed against the cage.
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.
Conway can't find room to land a body shot as Standa controls the action.

Conway breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Conway fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Standa, pushing him back against the cage.
Conway prevents Standa from breaking the clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Standa is looking to break free of the clinch but Conway has double underhooks.
Standa wants to get back to striking at distance but Conway won't allow it.

Conway's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Conway is breathing heavily.
Standa tries for a takedown but Conway sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Conway slips a jab and a cross from Standa.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Conway.

Conway pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Standa connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.


It looks like Aidan Conway has been cut.
Conway takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Standa tries to clinch but Conway is having none of it.
Conway walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.

Conway circles away from the clinch attempt.

Standa has managed to clinch.
Conway is still on wobbly legs! Can Standa finish him?
Standa is working for takedown but Conway is calmly controlling the position for now.
Conway seems to have recovered his senses.
Standa wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Conway has him pressed against the cage.

Conway has Standa pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Standa manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Standa wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Standa has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Conway is trying to keep an underhook but Standa manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Conway showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Standa.

Standa closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Conway is looking to clinch but Standa is avoiding it.
Conway gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Standa counters with a single leg into guard. Conway didn't expect that.
Standa is stalling in the full guard.
Standa trying to control but Conway is working from the bottom.

Standa lands a couple of digs.
Standa wants to control from the top but Conway keeps moving.
Standa slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Conway is striking but Standa is not phased and passes to half guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Conway is looking for a sweep. Standa is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!



Standa clinches.
Conway jumps guard but Standa stands there with Conway around his waist. Conway gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Conway has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Standa is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Conway breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

and Standa counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Standa is in close to Conway's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Standa is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Standa's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Standa decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.

Standa closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Standa lands in his opponent's guard.

Conway is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Standa defends well.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Well Standa has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
