Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mark Miller! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Aaron Cruz! The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Bruno Lombardi and Alyssa Summers.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Cruz scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. Cruz is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Cruz wants to take a breather but Miller is having none of it. Miller wants to control but Cruz is keeping busy and won't allow it. Miller tries to kick Cruz off in order to stand up. Cruz Avoids the leg push though and dives into side control. Cruz tries to score with some ground and pound. Miller controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage. Cruz working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Miller pushes Cruz away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Cruz gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cruz wants to control but Miller is keeping him busy. Cruz goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Miller has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Cruz but great work by Miller. Miller stands up and we're back to a striking position. Miller tries to clinch up. Miller closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage. Cruz is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though. Miller has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Cruz is trying to keep an underhook but Miller manages to get the takedown into half guard. Cruz is pressing down on Miller's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. Miller wants to stand but Cruz has a closed guard, so he can't escape. Cruz is pulling down on Miller's head. It's preventing any offense from Miller, at least for the moment.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Cruz tries to land a sweep but no joy. Miller is looking to stand up but Cruz won't let him. Miller trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful. Miller preventing the sweep. Miller wanted to stand there but Cruz had control of the position. Miller knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Cruz on the ground. Miller is breathing heavily. Cruz is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Miller is aware though and is defending well. Cruz is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Miller has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
That's three minutes gone in the round. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Cruz is on top in guard.
Cruz stops Miller from standing up. Miller working for a triangle but Cruz defends it easily.
Miller scrambles and gets back to his feet.
Cruz shoots in for a takedown but Miller shows good takedown defense.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Miller misses with a head kick.
Cruz shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Miller's guard. Cruz slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Cruz wants to control from the top but Miller keeps moving. Miller wants to stand up but Cruz is controlling him. Cruz trying to control the position from guard on top but Miller is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Aaron Cruz dominated that round. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!
Miller throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Miller gets in close and instigates a clinch. Miller tightens his grip and picks Cruz up, before dumping him to the ground. Cruz manages to land in guard. Cruz trying to control the position here. Cruz looking for a guillotine here but Miller defends easily.
Cruz wants to sweep but no luck. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Miller is looking to stand up but Cruz won't let him. Miller decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow. Mark Miller is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Miller rushes Cruz and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch. Cruz is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though. Cruz manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back. Miller is looking to stand up but Cruz won't let him. Cruz manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Miller manages to get himself to full guard.
Cruz postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Miller is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Cruz, into his guard. Cruz trying to control the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Cruz is looking to sweep but instead, Miller has passed into half guard.
Miller not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Miller trying to control from half guard but Cruz is working away. Miller wants to free his trapped foot but Cruz is holding on for dear life with his legs.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Miller is looking to take a break and control but Cruz is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Cruz moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Miller has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Cruz is proving hard to escape from. Cruz looking for a sweep. Not yet Cruz, not yet. Miller trying to control the position from guard on top but Cruz is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Cruz keeps the fight on the outside.
That's four minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Miller moves in looking to clinch but Cruz pushes him off. Cruz tries to clinch but Miller moves out of range. Miller tries to close the distance and clinch but Cruz swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Miller tries to clinch up but Cruz circles away and keeps his distance. Cruz fails with a takedown attempt. Miller throws a series of punches but Cruz moves out of range. Miller throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Cruz decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Cruz has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Miller defend it? Cruz steps over the head and cranks it - Miller is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Cruz!
