Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jeffrey Gailfus! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Travis Schalk! The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Robert Douchet and Ian Loll.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gailfus takes the fight into the clinch. Gailfus has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Schalk avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch. Schalk looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now. Gailfus missing with knees to the body.
Gailfus can't get the takedown.
Gailfus tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Schalk smiles and moves away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jeffrey Gailfus. That's going to take a lot out of him. Schalk moves into range and clinches up with Gailfus. Schalk tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Gailfus smiles and moves away.
Gailfus lands a nice looking body kick. Gailfus displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Schalk. Excellent takedown into side control there by Gailfus. Gailfus knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Schalk on the ground. Schalk tries to get back to half guard but can't. Schalk looks gassed!
That's one minute gone in the round. Gailfus takes a little break here. Schalk wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well. Schalk trying to control but Gailfus flips him over like a cheap hooker and has his back! Gailfus is controlling his opponent, waiting for an opportunity to finish. Gailfus scores with a nice shot to the head of his opponent. Schalk is looking for a way out. Schalk showing good submission defense here.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Schalk defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Gailfus's arms. Gailfus tries to keep control of the position but Schalk is staying busy. Gailfus really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Gailfus misses with an elbow to the head. Gailfus trying to control.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gailfus throwing wild punches that miss their target. Gailfus is trying to stick to Schalk's back but Schalk is turning into Gailfus. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Gailfus's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Schalk. Schalk slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Gailfus rushes Schalk and presses him up against the cage. Schalk fails to pull guard.
Schalk is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage. Gailfus is pushing Schalk up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word. Gailfus has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Schalk regains guard immediately. Gailfus trying to control but Schalk is working from the bottom.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Gailfus wants to pass the guard but Schalk is keeping the position. Gailfus with a flurry of punches that miss. Schalk is controlling Gailfus's posture. Gailfus scoring with punches to the head and body. Gailfus throwing strikes from guard but Schalk blocks nicely. Gailfus trying to control the position from guard on top but Schalk is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Jeffrey Gailfus dominated that round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Nice sprawl there from Gailfus as Schalk shoots in. Schalk fails with the takedown and Gailfus counters with a nice double leg into side control. Schalk won't be happy with that. Schalk prevents Gailfus from moving into mount. Gailfus is looking to take a break and control but Schalk is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Gailfus has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand. Gailfus has his takedown stuffed and Schalk counters with a nice double leg into half guard. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Gailfus is not content to let Schalk control the position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gailfus tries to get to full guard but Schalk has control of the leg. Schalk wants to take a breather but Gailfus is having none of it. Schalk prevents Gailfus from improving his position. Gailfus is trying to control but can't.

That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Gailfus rushes Schalk and presses him up against the cage. Gailfus wants a takedown.
Schalk tries to stall but Gailfus uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Gailfus is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath. Gailfus pulls guard successfully.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Schalk sitting in guard here, content to control. Gailfus tries to land a sweep but no joy. Gailfus pulls Schalk in close to his closed guard and prevents Schalk from doing any damage or advancing position.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Schalk misses with a takedown and Gailfus counters with a three punch combo that has Schalk backing up. Schalk nods at Gailfus to acknowledge the strikes. Jeffrey Gailfus has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Travis Schalk.
That's four minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Gailfus gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Schalk to score an easy takedown into full guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Schalk stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Gailfus swivels though and keeps the full guard. Gailfus will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Schalk advances to half guard. Gailfus wants to control but Schalk is keeping busy.
Gailfus tries to roll over but Schalk keeps him under control. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close second round but Travis Schalk will probably get the nod - 10:9. That's time! Gailfus's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.
Schalk clinches. Gailfus pulls Schalk into guard.
Gailfus looking for a sweep. Not yet Gailfus, not yet. Schalk's corner is telling him to maintain position. Gailfus will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Gailfus wants to sweep but no luck. Gailfus manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Schalk manages to get himself to full guard.
Gailfus trying to control but Schalk is working from the bottom. Gailfus is really struggling to control Schalk but he's trying to hold on to the position. Both fighters are breathing heavily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Schalk keeping full guard, as Gailfus tries to pass. Hammerfist, elbow! yells Gailfus's corner. There ya go! There ya go! Gailfus working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Gailfus content to stall in guard here. Schalk keeping full guard, as Gailfus tries to pass.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Schalk decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Gailfus tries to roll over but Schalk keeps him under control. Schalk tries to stand and escape but Gailfus actually recovers to full guard. Gailfus wants to sweep but no luck. Schalk postures up.
Gailfus is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Schalk decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gailfus with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Schalk to score with a decent uppercut. Schalk gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard. Gailfus looking to sit in guard and control but Schalk gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Gailfus wants to sweep but no luck. Jeffrey Gailfus overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Schalk wants to control from the top but Gailfus keeps moving.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Gailfus is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Gailfus working a defensive guard here.
Gailfus manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Schalk manages to get himself to full guard.

And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jeffrey Gailfus. Well Gailfus has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win...
