Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
8 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Paul Bourque! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Shoryu Ken! The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Paulo Santos and Matheus Silva.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ken tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Bourque paws at him with a jab and circles away. Bourque really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Bourque circles away from the clinch attempt.
Ken throws a body punch but Bourque moves out of range. Ken fails with an attempt to clinch.
Ken tries to clinch but Bourque is having none of it. Ken wants to clinch. Ken tries to clinch but Bourque moves out of range. Ken tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Bourque paws at him with a jab and circles away. Ken tries to clinch there but Bourque circles away.
No luck for Ken with that takedown attempt. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Bourque throws a series of punches but Ken avoids them all with ease. Ken misses with an uppercut. Shoryu Ken seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Bourque scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one. Bourque ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
That's one minute gone in the round. Bourque missing with a left hand there. Ken was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one. Ken shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Bourque but Bourque pushes him off and we're back to square one. Ken has a takedown stuffed. Paul Bourque has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Shoryu Ken. Bourque displaying good standup as he scores with a three punch combination. Bourque misses with a wild combination.
Ken throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. Bourque keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Ken wants to clinch. Ken thows a left - swing and a miss!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Bourque dips down and scores with a jab to the body. Ken looks gassed! Bourque connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Ken tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Bourque paws at him with a jab and circles away. Nice cross by Bourque.
Ken is rocked! Paul Bourque is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Bourque keeps the fight on the outside. Ken fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Ken walks straight into a right hand from Bourque - that's dropped him! Bourque jumps into mount and starts pounding away - can he finish?! More strikes go undefended and the referee has to dive in to save Ken from any more punishment! Ken complains about the stoppage but falls over as he tries to stand back up, so it was clearly a good stoppage.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:35 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punches). Paul Bourque! Paul Bourque retains his lightweight title!
