PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Merv Bungay (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shea Cuervo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cuervo is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by How I Could Just Kill a Man - Rage Against the Machine. The key to victory for Merv Bungay has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Merv Bungay!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Shea Cuervo!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Ian Loll and Trevor Gratis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bungay throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Cuervo takes a body punch but keeps moving.

Cuervo bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Bungay is not content to let Cuervo control the position.
Cuervo is trying to move to mount but Bungay reverses beautifully and ends up in Cuervo's guard.
Cuervo wants to sweep but no luck.

Cuervo throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Bungay escapes and throws Cuervo's legs to the side, diving into side control!

Bungay trying to control the action but Cuervo is working from the bottom.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Cuervo is trying to get back to half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Bungay wants to stand but Cuervo is controlling his arm.
Cuervo manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Cuervo is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Bungay is just riding it out for now. Cuervo eventually gives up the hold.
Cuervo looks gassed!

Cuervo is looking for a kimura here.
Bungay wants to control but Cuervo is keeping busy and won't allow it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Bungay tries to roll over but Cuervo keeps him under control.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Bungay connects with a body shot.
Cuervo takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Bungay fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Cuervo on the side of the head.
Bungay cracks Cuervo with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Nice takedown defense from Bungay. No joy for Cuervo on that attempt.
Bungay looks to land a combination but Cuervo avoids it well.
Bungay throws a left that rocks Cuervo and follows with a right that sends him tumbling to the canvas! Bungay dives into side control, looking to finish! Can Cuervo regain composure!


Cuervo is rocked!


It looks like Shea Cuervo has been cut.
Cuervo tries to buck Bungay off but Bungay is having none of it.
Cuervo is still in real trouble! Can Bungay finish him?
Bungay gets to mount! Cuervo was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly.
Cuervo seems to have recovered his senses.
Cuervo working to try and regain half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Bungay trying to control but Cuervo is having none of it.
Cuervo throwing punches from his back but nothing is landing.
Bungay trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Bungay is really struggling to control Cuervo but he's trying to hold on to the position.
Cuervo is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Bungay wants to control the pace but Cuervo is squirming around nicely.
Cuervo can't escape the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Bungay tries to control but Cuervo wriggling away.
Cuervo tries to reverse the position but Bungay maintains control.
Cuervo regains half guard.
Bungay knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Cuervo on the ground.
Bungay seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Cuervo does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Cuervo actively working from the bottom here.

Bungay stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Cuervo ducks right into an uppercut from Bungay.
Cuervo showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Bungay.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Merv Bungay dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Shea Cuervo's cut.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Cuervo will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Bungay throws a right and a left that Cuervo avoids nicely.
Cuervo shoots in but no luck this time.
Bungay keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Bungay works over Cuervo's head and body with a nice combination.
Cuervo takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
Bungay misses with a few strikes there.
Bungay swinging wilding here.
Cuervo changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Bungay tries to avoid it but Cuervo manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Bungay to the ground. Bungay escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Merv Bungay has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Shea Cuervo.
Bungay just misses with a punch to the body.
Bungay throws a looping overhand right but Cuervo ducks down to avoid it.
Cuervo shoots in looking for a takedown. Bungay tries to sprawl out of it but Cuervo keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Bungay manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Bungay swings for the body but Cuervo moves out of range.
Bungay throws a series of strikes that have Cuervo backpedaling.
Merv Bungay seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Bungay lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Cuervo at a distance.
Bungay throws a series of punches but Cuervo moves out of range.
Bungay scores with a jab.
Bungay throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Cuervo.
Bungay stuffs the takedown.
Cuervo takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Bungay rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Cuervo moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Bungay misses with a head kick.
Bungay misses with a straight right.
Bungay lands with a right and another and another! Cuervo is in big trouble! Bungay lands again and this time it's lights out for Cuervo! A quality knockout there for Bungay.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:39 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Strikes). Merv Bungay!
