PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Pat Calas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Willy Samson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Calas comes to the cage accompanied by Sonata Arctica - Fade to Black. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Pat Calas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Willy Samson!
The judges for this bout are Eddie Farnsworth, Russell Pearce and Alyssa Summers.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Samson staying out of range there.
Calas tries to close the distance and clinch up but Samson swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Calas throws a shot to the body.
Calas dives in and grabs Samson's left leg, looking for a takedown. Samson pushes down on Calas's head and hops out.
Calas tries a head kick but it misses.

Calas closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Samson makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!
Samson looks gassed!
Samson shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Calas waving his hands out infront of him, looking to distract Samson.

and Samson counters with a nice double leg into guard.

Calas is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Samson is aware though and is defending well.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Calas pulls Samson in close to his closed guard and prevents Samson from doing any damage or advancing position.
Calas manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Samson manages to get himself to full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Calas drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Calas jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Samson wants to sweep but no luck.

Calas postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Samson is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Calas, into his guard.
Samson wants to stand but Calas has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Samson wants to control from the top but Calas keeps moving.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Samson trying to control the position from guard on top but Calas is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Samson looking to sit in guard and control but Calas gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Calas trying to control the position from guard on top but Samson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Samson looking for subs off his back but Calas has passed one foot through into half guard.
Samson won't allow Calas to pass to mount.
Samson is looking to get back to full guard here but Calas has managed to pass to side control instead.

Calas looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Calas is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Samson is surviving well by controlling Calas's body position as best he can.

Calas swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Samson is now in Calas's guard. A big mistake from Calas there, giving up the dominant position!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

That's time! Calas's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Calas misses with a body punch

and Samson counters by moving into the clinch.
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.
Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Calas.

Samson manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Samson escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Calas gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Calas is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Samson is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Calas swings around for an armbar but Samson sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Calas's guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Samson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Calas swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Samson frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Samson wants to take his opponent's back but he's not managed it.
Samson tries to control but Calas wriggling away.

Calas tries to lock up and control but Samson gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Samson can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Calas is looking to escape.
Calas wants to control but Samson is having none of it.
Calas is trying to escape the mount but Samson keeps good control and instead manages to take Calas's back.
Samson tries to get the hooks in deep but Calas pushed the leg off.
Samson biding his time, looking for the opening.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Samson is looking to control Calas but Calas is wriggling around and keeping busy.
Calas tries to escape but Samson has the hooks in and won't let him break free.
Samson is trying to control but Calas is trying to escape here - he's now mounted.
Calas wants to control but Samson is having none of it.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Willy Samson showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!

Samson drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Calas manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Samson has Calas in his guard.

Samson is looking for a triangle here but Calas uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Samson takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Calas tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Calas has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Calas thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Calas is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Samson is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Samson tries to buck Calas off but Calas is having none of it.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Calas misses with a wild body shot.
Calas throws a hook but Samson blocks it.
Calas tries to clinch but fails miserably

so Samson counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Calas looking to hit a scissor sweep but Samson is one step ahead there.

Calas seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

I think Samson has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
