PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mike Lewis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mikolai Kovalchik (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Lewis comes to the cage accompanied by How low can you go- Luda. Kovalchik has chosen Indestructible by Disturbed as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Mikolai Kovalchik is staring across the cage at his opponent, tweaking his nipples.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mike Lewis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mikolai Kovalchik!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Stewart Dunkirk and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kovalchik works the jab nicely.
Lewis avoids a punch combination nicely.
Kovalchik will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Lewis shoots for a double leg takedown but Kovalchik sprawls well. He's pushed Lewis's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Kovalchik throws a nice looking combination but Lewis bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Mikolai Kovalchik seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Lewis shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

enabling Lewis to counter with a crisp jab.

and Lewis counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Kovalchik's guard now.
Mike Lewis has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mikolai Kovalchik.
Kovalchik utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Kovalchik scrambles and gets back to his feet.

Kovalchik throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Lewis feints and as Kovalchik raises his hands in defense, Lewis changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Lewis throwing shots but Kovalchik is blocking nicely.
Lewis seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Lewis is keen to just control but Kovalchik is a slippery customer.

Lewis lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
BOOM! Lewis connects with a massive shot to the dome!

and Lewis counters with a shoot takedown. Kovalchik fights it but they end up in guard.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Lewis postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

Lewis shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Kovalchik as he jumps to the side.

Kovalchik shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Lewis defends it nicely.
Lewis fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mike Lewis. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Lewis lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Kovalchik down.
Kovalchik wants to control but Lewis postures up.

Kovalchik is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Lewis asserts his dominance and retains side control.
Kovalchik takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
Lewis cracks Kovalchik with a big elbow.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Kovalchik tries to close the distance and clinch but Lewis swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Lewis shoots in looking for a takedown. Kovalchik tries to sprawl out of it but Lewis keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Kovalchik manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Lewis shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Kovalchik is trying to defend but Lewis finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Lewis thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Kovalchik's head.

Lewis is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Lewis moves nicely into side control.

Lewis tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Lewis has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Kovalchik is looking to regain half guard here but Lewis keeps moving and retains side control.
Lewis passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Kovalchik!

Mike Lewis overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Kovalchik is trying to get to the cage to help him get back to his feet.
Kovalchik is bucking up trying to escape but Lewis cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
Kovalchik takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
Kovalchik tries to hold on but Lewis pushes him away.
Lewis is landing with some decent strikes but Kovalchik is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

Kovalchik really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Lewis. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Lewis has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Kovalchik's face.

Lewis's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Lewis, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
