PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between James Martin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gram Mahone (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mahone has chosen 300 Violin Orchestra as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, James Martin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Gram Mahone!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Frank Antenori and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Martin closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Mahone tries to land knees in the clinch but Martin avoids the damage to the body.
Mahone tries for a takedown but Martin manages to get underhooks.

Martin's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Mahone fails with the takedown.
Mahone looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Martin is fending him off so far but Mahone persists. Nope, Martin circles away and we're back to standing.
James Martin has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Gram Mahone.
Martin defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Mahone.
Martin scores with a head kick.


It looks like Gram Mahone has been cut.
Mahone dives in and grabs Martin's left leg, looking for a takedown. Martin pushes down on Mahone's head and hops out.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Martin pulls Mahone into guard.
Martin trying to keep a closed guard but Mahone is proving a slippery customer.
Martin is striking off his back. Mahone thinks nothing of it though and passes easily into half guard.
Martin slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Martin manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Mahone manages to get himself to full guard.
Martin trying to control but Mahone is working from the bottom.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Mahone wants to stand but Martin is controlling the position.
Mahone is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
Mahone looks gassed!
Martin lands a couple of elbows.
Mahone has momentary wrist control but Martin slips an elbow through the middle.
Martin controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Mahone is working an open guard so Martin takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Mahone.

Martin shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Martin showed some decent athleticism there.
Martin has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Martin takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Martin is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Mahone!

Martin is going olschool here, as he tries to force Mahone to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Mahone shrugs it off.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Martin trying to control but Mahone is having none of it.
Martin won't let Mahone get back to his feet... He wants to keep the fight where it is for now.
Martin with shots to the head and body - Mahone looks very uncomfortable down there.

Martin sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
You get the feeling that Mahone really doesn't like being in this position too much.
Martin landing punches.
Martin with the ground and pound from mount.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Martin cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Martin takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Mahone really wants to buck Martin off and get back to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Martin throws some shoulder strikes here and then postures up. Oh, he's gone for an armbar! Mahone has his hands clasped together but Martin breaks the hold and Mahone is forced to tap! This one is aaaaaaaaaaall over! That was lightning fast by Martin!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:21 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). James Martin!
