PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Edward Welch (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Monkey D Luffi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Luffi has chosen One pece as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Edward Welch!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Monkey D Luffi!
The judges for this bout are Taro Takaoka, Yukihiro Yamamoto and Yasuomi Hirokawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Luffi throws a sloppy head kick and Welch moves out of range easily.

Welch drives through and clinches with Luffi against the cage.
Welch is working for takedown but Luffi is calmly controlling the position for now.

Luffi moves in looking to clinch but Welch pushes him off.
Welch blocks a head kick by Luffi.
Luffi fails with an attempt to clinch.

Welch looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Welch decides to stand and escape the position.
Luffi misses with a takedown

and Welch counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Luffi is in trouble now - Welch has advanced to mount!
Welch breaks from Luffi's wrist control and lands an elbow.

Welch controlling the pace for now.
Welch is landing with some decent strikes but Luffi is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Luffi is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Luffi really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Welch. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Luffi tries to hold on but Welch postures up.

Welch is in the full mount, landing strikes.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Luffi looks gassed!

The referee stands the fighters back up. Edward Welch just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.

Welch decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Welch in particular looking to stall.
Welch looks to score some points with some ground and pound.

That's time! Welch's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.



Welch clinches up against the cage.
Welch tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Luffi just stands there and leans against the cage.

Welch tries to land knees in the clinch but Luffi avoids the damage to the body.

Welch pushes Luffi off and gets back to his feet.

Welch gets a takedown into half guard.

Welch postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Luffi to stand up.

Luffi shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Welch sprawls well. Welch wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Luffi gets slowly back to his feet.
Welch really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

and Welch counters with a takedown into side control.
Edward Welch has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Monkey D Luffi.

Welch decides to stand up, so the ref orders Luffi to his feet.

Welch fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Luffi sprawls well initially but Welch persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Welch will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Welch connects with a nice short shot to Luffi's temple.
Welch is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Welch passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Luffi!
Edward Welch overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Luffi in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.
