PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Sarah Simpson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Henry Morgan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Henry Morgan told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Sarah Simpson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Henry Morgan!
The judges for this bout are David Schapiro, Columbo Gatti and Anthony Taglia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Morgan punishes Simpson's body with a nice straight punch.
Morgan scores to the head and body with a nice combination!
Simpson takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.

Morgan shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Simpson manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Morgan stops Simpson from standing up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Simpson can't keep his opponent in guard - Morgan advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Simpson might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Morgan seems to be working for a kimura but Simpson defends the submission attempt.
Simpson wants to get back to his feet.
Morgan lands strikes from half guard.
Simpson is trying to get back to full guard.

Morgan is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Simpson doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Morgan.

Morgan thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Simpson won't allow Morgan to pass to mount.
Morgan thows a huge punch but Simpson dodges it nicely.
Morgan not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Simpson is looking for a sweep. Morgan is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Morgan is just content to waste time from the top position. Simpson takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Morgan throws a head kick that looked like it stung.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Simpson throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Morgan was covering up waiting for the punch and Simpson finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Simpson is breathing heavily.

Simpson stands up from Morgan's guard - Simpson perhaps looking for a knockout.
Morgan lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.
Morgan bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Simpson's head.

Morgan stalks Simpson and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Simpson's face. Simpson staggers backwards, shaken.


Simpson is rocked!
Morgan lands with a slapping head kick.
Oh Simpson is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Morgan thuds his shin into the meat of Simpson's side.
Simpson seems to have got his legs back now.

Morgan decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Morgan is keen to just control but Simpson is a slippery customer.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Morgan is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Morgan wants to pass the guard but Simpson is defending well.
Morgan wants to take a breather but Simpson is having none of it.

Morgan is working for a submission of some sort.
Simpson is looking to improve his position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Morgan working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Morgan tries to stand and escape but Simpson is controlling the position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Morgan drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Morgan wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Simpson, who protects the arm well.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Morgan misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Henry Morgan dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Morgan changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Simpson looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Morgan tries to advance to mount but Simpson instead regains half guard.
Morgan is pressing down on Simpson's thigh, looking to free his foot. Simpson is holding on for now.

Morgan drops back, looking for a kneebar! Simpson looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Simpson looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Simpson!
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
You can see the frustration on Morgan's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Morgan is not content to let Simpson control the position.
Morgan tries to escape but Simpson is in control.
Morgan manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Morgan wants to lay and pray for a moment but Simpson keeps working.

Morgan is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Simpson is just riding it out for now. Morgan eventually gives up the hold.

Morgan is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Simpson is trying to maintain the position but Morgan is very close to passing his half guard.

Morgan is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Simpson sees it coming and defends easily.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Morgan has his takedown stuffed

and Simpson counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Morgan has Simpson pressed against the cage.

Morgan breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Morgan tries for a takedown but Simpson circles away easily
and Simpson counters with a right hand to the body.
Simpson has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Simpson there as he acknowledges the shot.

Morgan bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Morgan thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Henry Morgan showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Morgan looks to land a combination. Simpson sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.

Morgan fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Simpson, pushing him back against the cage.
Simpson is pressed up against the cage. Morgan has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Simpson down to the mat. Simpson avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

Morgan rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Simpson moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Morgan shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Simpson is trying to defend but Morgan finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Simpson manages to get to full guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Morgan throws and elbow that misses. Simpson uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Morgan's guard. Nice move by Simpson!

Simpson trying to control the position from guard on top but Morgan is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Morgan looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Simpson has picked Morgan up and slammed him! Morgan can't keep hold of the triangle and Simpson manages to pass to side control!

Simpson tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Morgan paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Morgan moves into the clinch successfully.

Morgan will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Morgan lets loose with a powerful body kick. Simpson will feel that in the morning.

and Morgan counters with a lovely straight right hand!

Morgan lands a couple of digs.
Morgan wants to control from the top but Simpson keeps moving.

Morgan looking to sit in guard and control but Simpson gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Simpson stands up from guard. Let's bang!

Morgan closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Morgan lands in his opponent's guard.

Henry Morgan is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Simpson throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

Henry Morgan comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Morgan has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
