PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Joseph Estrada (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ariel Sakuraba (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Joseph Estrada!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Ariel Sakuraba!
The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Seu Braga and Alexandre Firmino.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Estrada tries to close the distance and clinch up but Sakuraba swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Sakuraba pushes Estrada up against the cage in a clinch.
Estrada letting Sakuraba take a breather here.

Estrada is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Sakuraba can't fight it off and eventually Estrada manages to take the fight to the floor. Sakuraba looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Estrada wants to control from the top but Sakuraba keeps moving.
Sakuraba wants to sweep here but Estrada controlling him for the moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Estrada won't allow Sakuraba to get back to his feet.
Sakuraba has control of Estrada's left arm, preventing Estrada from doing any damage.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Estrada.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Estrada fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Sakuraba misses with a few strikes there.

and Estrada counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Sakuraba gets full guard.
Estrada throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Estrada stays in close to Sakuraba's body and controls the position.
Sakuraba is trying to keep Estrada in close.

Sakuraba is controlling Estrada's posture.
Sakuraba is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Estrada is controlling him.
Sakuraba looks gassed!

Sakuraba throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Estrada escapes and throws Sakuraba's legs to the side, diving into side control!

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Sakuraba tries to escape but Estrada is in control.
Sakuraba striking from the bottom but nothing landed.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Estrada goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Sakuraba rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Estrada's guard! Nice work there by Sakuraba!
Estrada controls Sakuraba momentarily but Sakuraba frees himself.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Back to the action!


Sakuraba misses with a hook to the body

and Estrada counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Sakuraba's guard now.
Sakuraba manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Estrada manages to get himself to full guard.

Sakuraba postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Estrada is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Sakuraba, into his guard.

Sakuraba throwing strikes off his back to little effect.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Sakuraba is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Estrada got a little sloppy there for a moment and Sakuraba has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Estrada has managed to get both his arms back between Sakuraba's legs - danger averted.

Sakuraba looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Estrada passes into side control.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

You can see the frustration on Sakuraba's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Estrada is looking to take a break and control but Sakuraba is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Estrada tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Estrada has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Sakuraba sneaks back into half guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Estrada is looking to stall here but Sakuraba recovers full guard.
Sakuraba is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Estrada stopping the sweep attempt from Sakuraba.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Joseph Estrada dominated that second round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!



Sakuraba shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Sakuraba can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Estrada is looking to escape.

Sakuraba misses with a head shot.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Estrada stops Sakuraba from taking his back. Still, being mounted isn't any better.
Sakuraba can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Estrada is looking to escape.
Estrada is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Estrada wants to hold on but Sakuraba pushes him away.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Sakuraba takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Sakuraba can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Estrada is looking to escape.

Sakuraba content just to control the position here.
Sakuraba is landing with some decent strikes but Estrada is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Estrada is looking to get to half guard.

Sakuraba looking to isolate an arm here. Estrada doesn't see it coming and as Sakuraba extends the arm, he's forced to tap out! Nice submission by Sakuraba!
