The bell rings for round one and we are underway! James swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
James gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard. Carlson is fighting to break James's control of his arms but James is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment. Carlson trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. James looking to control.
James is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. James is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Carlson won't allow James to sweep him here. Carlson wants to pass the guard but James is keeping the position. Carlson drops back looking for a leg! James is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and James manages to kick Carlson off! Carlson jumps back into James's guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Carlson shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has James pinned against the cage. James gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. James bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. James looking to control but instead Carlson has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard. James wants to control but Carlson is keeping him busy. Carlson wants to get back to his feet. James is keen to just control but Carlson is a slippery customer. James is controlling the pace.

James manages to work his way to half guard, despite Carlson's best efforts. James is trying to get back to full guard. James flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.

Carlson shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and James counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Carlson's guard now. Carlson lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for James! Carlson content just to control the position here. James is wriggling around trying to escape.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. James is working hard here to advance position. Carlson avoids the attempt from James to control. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Daniel Carlson showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Carlson with a lazy takedown attempt and James counters with a takedown into side control. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Carlson tries to escape but James is in control. James stands up and beckons Carlson to his feet. Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Carlson. James scores with a body shot.

It's a sloppy attempt though and Carlson jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Carlson stopping the sweep attempt from James.
