The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Penn throws a body kick that digs right into the meat. Nice takedown defense from Luc. No joy for Penn on that attempt. Luc with a lazy takedown attempt and Penn counters with a nice double leg into side control. Luc won't be happy with that. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Penn stands up. Penn darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Ground and pound from Penn. Luc tries to roll over but Penn keeps him under control. Penn trying to control from Luc's half guard. Luc has other ideas though and has regained full guard. Penn looking to pass the guard. Penn tries to stand but Luc is controlling from the bottom.
That's one minute gone in the round. Luc controls Penn momentarily but Penn frees himself. Luc looking to hit a scissor sweep but Penn is one step ahead there. Penn pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Luc is keeping the position for now.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Penn gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard. Luc trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Luc wants to control from the top but Penn keeps moving. Penn looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Penn is breathing heavily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Penn has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Luc can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Luc tries to free his leg and advance position but Penn is retaining full guard. Luc drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Luc jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Penn is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Luc is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Penn lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Luc!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Luc is working to get back to half guard.
Penn is going olschool here, as he tries to force Luc to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Luc shrugs it off. Luc sneaks a leg under to get to half guard. Luc should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete. Penn decides to stand and escape the position. Luc is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Penn's half guard. Penn looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Penn won't allow Luc to pass to mount. Luc is stalling here. Penn is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Luc seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Penn has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work. Penn is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Luc knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Luc manages to work his way to half guard, despite Penn's best efforts. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Luc trying to control but Penn postures up.
Penn working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
JB Penn dominated that round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Penn has managed to clinch.
Penn escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Luc shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Penn counters with a single leg into guard. Luc didn't expect that. We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Luc has eaten all the pies! Penn stopping the sweep attempt from Luc. Penn forces his way into half guard. Penn scoring with strikes to the body and head. Penn is trying to work for a kimura but Luc is defending well.
Luc wants to improve his position but Penn is controlling well.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Penn seems to be working for a kimura but Luc defends the submission attempt. Penn is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Luc is just riding it out for now. Penn eventually gives up the hold. Luc works his way to full guard. Good work. Luc is looking to sweep but instead, Penn has passed into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Luc is looking for a sweep. Penn is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Penn will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Penn working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that. Luc is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Penn is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Luc has managed to free his arm - good work. Luc looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Penn trying to mount his opponent but Luc defends it. Penn is trying to work for a kimura but Luc is defending well.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Penn is thwarting Luc's attempts to control the position. Penn has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Luc defend it? Penn steps over the head and cranks it - Luc is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Penn!
