PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Ben Avit (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Duke Cottingham (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Duke Cottingham told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Ben Avit!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Duke Cottingham!
The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Summer Carpenter and Bruno Hogan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cottingham changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Avit tries to avoid it but Cottingham manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Avit to the ground. Avit escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Cottingham avoids a lazy jab quite easily.

Avit takes the fight into the clinch.
Avit jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Cottingham walks away with a smile on his face. Avit gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Avit shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

Avit is pressing down on Cottingham's thigh, looking to free his foot. Cottingham is holding on for now.
Avit uses his free foot to push down on Cottingham's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Cottingham.
Avit prevents Cottingham from getting the reversal.

Avit is looking to stand but Avit has his arms wrapped tightly around him, looking to prevent the damage.
Cottingham can't escape the position.

Avit jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Cottingham is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Cottingham and Avit has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Avit is looking to take a break and control but Cottingham is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Cottingham really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Avit. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Cottingham can do anything to dispel that myth.
Avit can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Cottingham is looking to escape.

Avit has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Avit lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.
Avit lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Avit.

Avit just misses with a punch to the body.

Cottingham shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Avit but Avit pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Cottingham tries to clinch up but Avit circles away and keeps his distance.
Cottingham shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Avit pinned against the cage. Avit gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Avit scores with a punch to the head.
Cottingham is breathing heavily.

Cottingham shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Cottingham was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Avit manages to regain half guard. Good work.
Cottingham should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Avit wants to control but Cottingham is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Cottingham drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Avit manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Cottingham has Avit in his guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Avit is keen to just control but Cottingham is a slippery customer.

Avit is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Cottingham doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Avit.

That was a close second round but I would say that Ben Avit will probably get the nod.

Cottingham takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
Good exchange - Avit coming out on top.
Cottingham shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Avit but Avit pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Avit stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet.

Avit fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Cottingham sprawls well initially but Avit persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Cottingham is refusing to be controlled, as Avit sits in half guard.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Cottingham is looking to get back to full guard here but Avit has managed to pass to side control instead.
Cottingham is squirming around, avoiding Avit's attempts to control the action.
Cottingham throws a strike from the bottom but Avit uses the opportunity to take his back.
Avit lands a punch that was close to the back of the head but the ref thinks it's OK.

Avit patiently working for the choke. Which fighter will keep their nerve here?
Cottingham can't escape the position.
Cottingham turns into Avit and is now in his guard.

Cottingham drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Avit dives on top into guard.
Ben Avit overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Cottingham had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Avit is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Cottingham Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Avit's back instead.

Cottingham is hanging on to Avit's back as he tries to escape.
Avit has his hands over his head blocking the strikes from Cottingham.
Even with his hooks in, Cottingham manages to miss with strikes from the back.

Cottingham has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Avit has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
