PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Fred Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joe Invandra (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Joe Invandra told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Fred Jones!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Joe Invandra!
The judges for this bout are Taro Takaoka, Yukihiro Yamamoto and Shigeki Sano.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Invandra throws a nice inside leg kick.

Jones gets a takedown into half guard.
Jones seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Jones lands strikes from half guard.

Jones is working for a submission of some sort.

Jones is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Jones could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Jones wants to stand up but Invandra manages to regain full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Invandra is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Jones is aware though and is defending well.
Invandra looks gassed!
Invandra keeping moving, preventing Jones from controlling successfully.
Jones stands up over Invandra, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Jones thows a big elbow that misses.
Jones controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Jones trying to control but Invandra is working from the bottom.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Jones postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Invandra is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Jones, into his guard.
Jones is pulling down on Invandra's head to control his posture.
Jones wants to sweep but no luck.
Jones not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Jones is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Invandra with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Invandra preventing the sweep.
Invandra slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Jones is trying to escape the position but Invandra is controlling the position.
Jones taking a bit of punishment here - Invandra scoring with strikes.
Jones can't do much from the bottom here.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Invandra landing strikes.
Jones wants to get back to his feet.
Invandra happy to just control the position for now.
Invandra lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Invandra moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Invandra slips a jab and a cross from Jones.
Fred Jones is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Invandra avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Jones closes the distance and clinches.
Jones tries to pull guard but Invandra won't allow it.
Jones slowing the pace effectively.
Invandra working hard to break the clinch.
Jones stops a takedown attempt from Invandra.
Invandra tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Jones smiles and moves away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Invandra moves out of range as Jones throws a body kick.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Jones decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Jones is working for a kimura but Invandra is defending it quite comfortably.
Invandra wants to improve his position but Jones is controlling well.
Jones controlling the action here.
Jones stalling away here and it's allowed Invandra to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Invandra throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Jones trying to control the position from guard on top but Invandra is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Invandra looking to control.
Jones wants to pass the guard but Invandra is keeping the position.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Jones is defended easily by Invandra.
The fight stays on the outside here - Jones looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Invandra tries to close the distance and clinch but Jones swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Invandra fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Fred Jones has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Joe Invandra.
Jones doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Invandra counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.

Invandra closes the distance and clinches.

Jones breaks the clinch.

Invandra looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Invandra controlling the action here.

Nice strikes from Invandra there.
Invandra wants to pass to mount but Jones is defending the position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Jones gets back to full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Fred Jones will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!



Invandra has Jones up against the cage in a clinch.

Jones successfully pulls guard.
Jones wants to improve his position but instead Invandra has moved into half guard.
Jones trying to control here.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Invandra wants to take a breather but Jones is having none of it.

Jones closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Invandra is concentrating on defense, preventing Jones from advancing position.
Jones tries to stand but his hand is stuck under Invandra.
Invandra tries to get to full guard but Jones has control of the leg.
Invandra moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Jones prevents Invandra from getting back to his feet.
Invandra controlling Jones's posture.

Invandra keeping moving, preventing Jones from controlling successfully.
Invandra managing to control the position.
Invandra is trying to keep Jones in close.
Jones wants to pass the guard but Invandra is keeping the position.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Jones trying to control but Invandra is working from the bottom.
Jones throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Invandra tries to clinch up.

Jones moves into the clinch.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Jones can't break the clinch.
Invandra trying to stall but Jones improves his position.

Invandra has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Jones regains guard immediately.
Joe Invandra has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Fred Jones is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Invandra thows a big elbow that misses.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Joe Invandra.
I think Jones has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
