PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Angel Pierce (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matthew Gill (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pierce comes into the arena with Billy Talent - Devil On My Shoulder blaring out of the sound system. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Angel Pierce!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Matthew Gill!
The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, Elvis Blanc and William Peck.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Pierce looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Pierce performing his best blanket impression for a moment.

Pierce is working for a kimura but Gill is defending it quite comfortably.
Pierce looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Pierce wants to work for an arm triangle but Gill is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Pierce really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Pierce is looking to take a break and control but Gill is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Pierce is working for a kimura but Gill is defending it quite comfortably.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gill is trying to get back to full guard.

Gill is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Gill is looking to escape.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Gill misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Pierce.
Gill leaves Pierce with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
The fighters circling - Gill throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Pierce avoids the head kick by Gill.
Pierce slips a jab from Gill.
Pierce shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Gill defends it nicely.
Gill lands a jab-cross combination.

Pierce slips under a jab.
Pierce fails with the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Angel Pierce. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Gill pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Gill lands with a nice combination. Pierce backs away looking to recover.
Gill jabs Pierce right on the nose. Pierce blinks but takes it well.

Pierce drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Gill is looking to get back to his feet here but Pierce is keeping cool and he's managed to take Gill's back.

Gill staying busy and making it hard for Pierce to control.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gill tries to break free.

Pierce working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet.
Pierce is breathing heavily.

Pierce has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Gill has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
Pierce gets his hands free as Gill looks to control.
Gill is really stuck here.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Gill wants to control his opponent's hands but Pierce gets his hands free.

Pierce looking to break Gill's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Gill remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Pierce will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Angel Pierce dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Gill defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Pierce.
Gill tries to land a front kick but Pierce steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Gill looks to land a combination but Pierce avoids it well.
Pierce avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Gill misses with the combination.
Angel Pierce is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Pierce shoots in looking for a takedown. Gill tries to sprawl out of it but Pierce keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Gill manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Pierce avoids the body shot from Gill.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gill slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Pierce uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Gill.
A punch combination from Gill misses.

Gill throws a right and a left that both miss.
Gill pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Gill swings for the body but Pierce moves out of range.
Gill misses with a jab, cross combination.

Pierce scores with a takedown into Gill's guard.
Pierce wants to control from the top but Gill keeps moving.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Pierce sitting in guard here, content to control.

Gill is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Pierce defends well.
Pierce advances position into side control!

Pierce tries for a kimura but Gill is defending well.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Pierce working away.
Gill is not content to let Pierce control the position.

Gill is trying to improve his position.
Gill is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Pierce is controlling him well.
Pierce remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Gill tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Pierce wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Gill is trying to control Pierce's posture but Pierce avoids it.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Pierce moves away from the strike by Gill.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Gill misses with a wild combination.

Pierce shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Pierce showed some decent athleticism there.

Gill looking for a kimura from the bottom but Pierce passes into side control!
Pierce is staying tight to Gill's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Pierce trying to control the position but Gill is working away.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Pierce displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Gill throws out the jab.
Gill throws a leg kick but Pierce checks it.

Pierce decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Gill tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Pierce has advanced to mount. Uh oh.
Gill tries to hold on but Pierce postures up.
Gill is squirming around, avoiding Pierce's attempts to control the action.

Pierce is working for a guillotine from mount but Gill frees his head quite easily.
Pierce looking to control and managing it successfully.
Gill wants to control but Pierce is having none of it.
Pierce controlling from mount.

Gill defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Pierce.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Gill is looking to improve his position but Pierce isn't that keen on the idea.

Pierce looking to secure an arm triangle but Gill defends it well.

Pierce working for a submission but Gill is keeping him at bay.
Matthew Gill has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Gill really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Pierce. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Gill is trying desperately to improve position.
Pierce wants to control the pace but Gill is squirming around nicely.

Gill is looking to get to half guard.
Gill tries to lock up and control but Pierce gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Gill is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.
Pierce will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Pierce looking to control but Gill is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Angel Pierce is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Gill really wants to buck Pierce off and get back to his feet.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Pierce looking to control and managing it successfully.

Pierce looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Gill flailing away with punches but nothing is landing.
Pierce sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Angel Pierce just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
Gill connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Pierce's hands.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

And that's the end of the fight!
Angel Pierce showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Pierce, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
