Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the heavyweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Andrey Nikolayev! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Evgeni Klitchkev! The judges for this bout are Fedor Mirinova, Illya Tyunina and Aleksandr Martynov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Klitchkev ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face. Nikolayev lands a glancing blow to the side of Klitchkev's head.
It looks like Evgeni Klitchkev has been cut. Nikolayev lands the left hand. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Nikolayev will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Nikolayev throws a lazy right hand but Klitchkev sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily. Nikolayev shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Klitchkev actively working from the bottom here. Nikolayev wants to stand up but Klitchkev is controlling the position.
Klitchkev moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Klitchkev manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Nikolayev manages to get himself to full guard.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Klitchkev would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Klitchkev tries to free his leg and advance position but Nikolayev is retaining full guard. Nikolayev avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Klitchkev trying to control but Nikolayev is working from the bottom. Nikolayev on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Nikolayev tries to get out of the position. Klitchkev pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Nikolayev is keeping the position for now. Klitchkev trying to control the position from guard on top but Nikolayev is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Klitchkev stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Nikolayev swivels though and keeps the full guard. Klitchkev is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Nikolayev misses with a looping left. Klitchkev slips a jab from Nikolayev. Klitchkev tries for a takedown but Nikolayev circles away easily letting Nikolayev counter with a right hand. Nikolayev gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Klitchkev counters with a nice double leg into guard. Klitchkev is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Nikolayev is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Nikolayev has escaped and now he's on top! Nikolayev is looking to stand up but Klitchkev won't let him. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Nikolayev is breathing heavily.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Nikolayev gets to his feet - Klitchkev follows without any prompting. Nikolayev doesn't succeed with the takedown and Klitchkev counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Andrey Nikolayev. That's going to take a lot out of him. Klitchkev wants to take a breather but Nikolayev is having none of it. Nikolayev avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Klitchkev. Klitchkev is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Klitchkev is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Nikolayev is just riding it out for now. Klitchkev eventually gives up the hold. Klitchkev is working for a submission of some sort.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Klitchkev prevents Nikolayev from standing back up.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Nikolayev is not content to let Klitchkev control the position. Klitchkev is looking to advance position but Nikolayev won't allow it. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Andrey Nikolayev dominated that round. The cut man is working on Evgeni Klitchkev's cut. That's time! Back to the action!
Klitchkev shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Nikolayev napping and manages to drive through into side control! Klitchkev thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Klitchkev goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Nikolayev has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Klitchkev but great work by Nikolayev. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Klitchkev tries to bench press Nikolayev off him but Nikolayev keeps the position. Nikolayev lands an elbow. Nikolayev stands up and beckons Klitchkev to his feet. Nikolayev tries to clinch and Klitchkev counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
That's one minute gone in the round. Nikolayev wants to get back to his feet but Klitchkev is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Klitchkev tries to free his leg and advance position but Nikolayev is retaining full guard. Klitchkev stops Nikolayev from standing up. Klitchkev drops back, looking for a kneebar! Nikolayev looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Nikolayev looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Nikolayev! Nikolayev has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand. Nikolayev swings and misses with a shot to the body and Klitchkev counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Nikolayev's guard now. Klitchkev trying to control the position from guard on top but Nikolayev is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Klitchkev drops back looking for a leg! Nikolayev is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Nikolayev manages to kick Klitchkev off! Klitchkev jumps back into Nikolayev's guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Klitchkev drops back looking for a submission - "I'm sorry sir, but I'm gunna break your leg" says Klitchkev as he cranks on the unfortunate limb! Nikolayev screams and taps out before any major damage is done! Don't mess with Klitchkev! Nice submission victory there!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:25 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kneebar). Evgeni Klitchkev! Evgeni Klitchkev is the new heavyweight champion!
