PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Stan Mathers (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rory Wilson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Stan Mathers had real problems making weight for this fight. After initially coming in at 146.1lbs, he had two hours to make the official fight weight. He made it but it will have taken a lot out of him to cut those extra few pounds. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Stan Mathers!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Rory Wilson!
The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, Gregory Folan and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mathers throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Wilson's waist but Wilson gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Mathers off to one side.
Wilson tries to clinch up.
Mathers wants to clinch up but Wilson keeps it at a distance.
Wilson throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Wilson throws a head kick that misses.
Mathers misses with a takedown attempt - Wilson sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Mathers closes the distance and clinches up with Wilson, looking for a takedown. Mathers pushes Wilson against the cage but Wilson circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Stan Mathers. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Wilson decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Mathers is refusing to be controlled, as Wilson sits in half guard.
Mathers tries to roll over but Wilson keeps him under control.
Well, if Wilson is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Mathers tries to get to full guard but Wilson has control of the leg.
Wilson not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Wilson frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Mathers blocking the ground and pound.
Wilson landing shots from mount.
Mathers avoids a series of strikes thrown by Wilson.
Wilson takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Mathers looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back!
Wilson controlling the position well here. Mathers rolled but Wilson kept the hooks locked in and stayed in the dominant position.
Wilson looks gassed!
Mathers manages to reverse the position and now he's in Wilson's guard. Nice work there by Mathers.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Mathers stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Wilson swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Mathers forces his way into half guard.
Wilson is not content to let Mathers control the position.
Wilson is positioning himself well to prevent Mathers advancing to mount.
Wilson is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Mathers trying to control the action but Wilson is working from the bottom.
Wilson wants to improve his position but Mathers is controlling well.
Mathers is looking to pass Wilson's guard but actually Wilson recovers to full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Wilson escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Mathers gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Wilson looking for a sweep. Not yet Wilson, not yet.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Wilson scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Mathers wants to improve his position but Wilson is controlling well.

Mathers looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Mathers tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Wilson has advanced to mount. Uh oh.
Wilson lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Mathers keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Wilson takes Mathers's back.
Mathers trying to control but not successfully.
Wilson is trying to stick to Mathers's back but Mathers is turning into Wilson. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Wilson's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Mathers.
Mathers wants to control from the top but Wilson keeps moving.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Mathers is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Wilson is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Wilson has escaped and now he's on top!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rory Wilson dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Mathers with a poor takedown

Mathers tries to improve position but can't.

Wilson is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Mathers knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Mathers is looking for a sweep.
Wilson trying to control the position but Mathers is working away.

Mathers is not content to let Wilson control the position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Mathers with a lazy takedown attempt

and Wilson decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Mathers's guard.

Mathers is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Wilson slips nicely into half guard.

Wilson is trying to control the action in half guard but Mathers is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Wilson passes into side control, despite Mathers's attempt to control the position.
Mathers wants to control but Wilson postures up.
Mathers manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Mathers wants to get back to full guard.
Mathers works his way to full guard. Good work.
Wilson trying to control but Mathers is working from the bottom.

Mathers has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Wilson should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Mathers has tightened it up now! Wilson should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!
