Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Tyler Walker! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Joe Santiago! The judges for this bout are , Frank Antenori and Timothy Bukovac.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A combination from Walker does no damage. Walker missing with a left hand there. Santiago was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one. Walker shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Santiago but Santiago pushes him off and we're back to square one. Walker throws a hook to the side of Santiago's head but Santiago sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully. Santiago is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Walker comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range. Walker throws a wild combination but nothing lands. Walker gets the takedown into side control. Santiago is looking for a sweep. Santiago is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here. Walker tries to advance to mount but can't. Santiago tries to improve position but can't. Santiago gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard. Walker not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Walker missing with the ground and pound from half guard. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Santiago wants to get back to full guard. Walker has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Walker shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Santiago but Santiago pushes him off and we're back to square one. Walker bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
That's one minute gone in the round. Walker lands a decent elbow from side control. You can see the frustration on Santiago's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Walker working the body and head with strikes. Santiago struggling a bit here. Santiago is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Walker tries for a kimura but Santiago is defending well. Walker tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it. Walker is breathing heavily. Santiago wants to get back to his feet but Walker drags him back down. Santiago is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard. Walker throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Walker not landing any meaningful shots this time. Walker working Santiago over with strikes. Walker missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Walker prevents Santiago from standing back up.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Santiago tries to close the distance and clinch but Walker swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Walker slips a straight right by Santiago. Walker avoids a lazy jab quite easily. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Walker. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Tyler Walker. That's going to take a lot out of him. Santiago connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son. Walker lands the left hand. Walker scores a takedown into full mount! Walker pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage. Walker throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Santiago because Walker loaded up on that one. Santiago is trying desperately to improve position. Santiago is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Walker throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Santiago tries to get back to half guard but can't.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Santiago taking shots to the head. Santiago gets back to half guard. Santiago is trying to get back to full guard. Santiago works his way to full guard. Good work. Santiago utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Walker throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Walker pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Santiago is keeping the position for now. Walker is working Santiago over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes. Santiago tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Walker swings for the body but Santiago moves out of range.
Santiago tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Walker was well out of range. Poor timing from Santiago. Walker shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Walker might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Walker drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Walker jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Santiago controls Walker momentarily but Walker frees himself. Santiago looking for a guillotine here but Walker defends easily.
Santiago lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Walker! Santiago stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet. Santiago showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Walker.
Joe Santiago seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Walker takes a swing at Santiago's ribcage but misses. Walker tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Santiago was well out of range. Poor timing from Walker. Wow, both these guys are really going for it! Santiago tries to clinch up but Walker circles away and keeps his distance. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Tyler Walker dominated that round. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Santiago paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
It looks like Tyler Walker has been cut. A big right from Walker misses. Santiago lands a big head kick that sends Walker to the canvas! Santiago follows up with strikes from the mount that forces the ref to step in and stop the fight!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:11 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Joe Santiago!
