Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the bantamweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Nelson Gracie! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Peter John Murphy! The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Thiago Cunha and Luis Engracia.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A jab from Murphy finds it's way through Gracie's defenses. Murphy throws a hook but Gracie avoids it easily. Gracie shoots in for a double leg but Murphy sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Gracie throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Murphy's waist but Murphy gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Gracie off to one side. No luck with that takedown attempt from Gracie. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Nelson Gracie. That's going to take a lot out of him. Gracie shoots in for a takedown but Murphy shows good takedown defense. Murphy digs a good hook to Gracie's body.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gracie walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head. Horrible takedown by Gracie or perhaps it was just good defense by Murphy which made him look bad. Gracie shoots in for a takedown but Murphy shows good takedown defense.
That's one minute gone in the round. Murphy connects with a crisp jab. Gracie dives in and grabs Murphy's left leg, looking for a takedown. Murphy pushes down on Gracie's head and hops out. Gracie shoots in for a takedown but Murphy shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Gracie shoots in but no luck this time. Nelson Gracie seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Gracie is defended easily by Murphy. Nice takedown defense from Murphy. No joy for Gracie on that attempt.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Murphy thows a body shot but no joy. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Gracie is defended easily by Murphy. Murphy fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Gracie looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath. Gracie fails to land the takedown. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Gracie. Gracie shoots in and drives through. Murphy sprawls well.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Nice uppercut lands for Murphy. That snapped Gracie's head back.
Murphy connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Gracie's hands. Murphy stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Murphy wants it to stay on the feet. Murphy paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button. Murphy lands a right hook to the body.
Gracie fails with an attempt to clinch.
Gracie takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt. Murphy stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Murphy wants it to stay on the feet.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Murphy dips down and scores with a jab to the body. Murphy lands an overhand right. Murphy throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Gracie fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Murphy's corner calls for a 1-2. Murphy obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Murphy defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Gracie. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Gracie is defended easily by Murphy. Murphy is landing a lot of head punches in this opening round!Gracie had better start moving his head a bit unless he wants his face to turn into pâté. Murphy looks to land a right hand but Gracie moved out of range. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Murphy takes a swing at Gracie's ribcage but misses. Gracie closes the distance and clinches up with Murphy, looking for a takedown. Gracie pushes Murphy against the cage but Murphy circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Gracie fails with a takedown attempt. Gracie tries to close the distance and clinch up but Murphy swats him away and circles back towards the center. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gracie doesn't manage to clinch there - Murphy circles away.

Gracie scores a takedown into full mount! The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gracie is going olschool here, as he tries to force Murphy to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Murphy shrugs it off. Murphy defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Gracie. Gracie has control of Murphy's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Murphy regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Murphy's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up. Gracie is working for a guillotine from mount but Murphy frees his head quite easily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. You get the feeling that Murphy really doesn't like being in this position too much.
Murphy is squirming around, avoiding Gracie's attempts to control the action. Murphy wants to try and get back to his feet. Gracie working for a guillotine from mount but Murphy is in no mood to give up. Murphy wants to get back to his feet.
Gracie has hold of Murphy's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Murphy manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gracie controlling the pace for now. Gracie looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet. Gracie jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Murphy is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Murphy and Gracie has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Murphy wants to get back to his feet but Gracie drags him back down. Gracie wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Murphy, who protects the arm well. Gracie looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Gracie tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Nelson Gracie dominated that second round. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Gracie is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Murphy sees it coming and defends easily. Gracie is working for a submission of some sort.
Both fighters are breathing heavily. Gracie is looking for a kimura but Murphy is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Gracie to get the leverage. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Gracie prevents Murphy from standing back up.
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Gracie will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Gracie is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Gracie tries to score a power double leg takedown but Murphy sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Gracie somewhat. Peter John Murphy is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Murphy with a nice cross.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gracie fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Nelson Gracie. That's going to take a lot out of him. Gracie shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Gracie shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Murphy napping and manages to drive through into side control! Gracie is looking to take a break and control but Murphy is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Gracie has hold of Murphy's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Murphy seems comfortable defending it but Gracie has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Murphy is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Murphy is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but Gracie couldn't care less - he's delighted!
