PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ken Severn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Miyamoto Usagi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Severn comes to the cage accompanied by Pride FC Theme. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Ken Severn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Miyamoto Usagi!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Yamamoto, Kenichi Hosakawa and Sosuke Kotani.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Usagi misses with a double jab.
Usagi moves out of range of the strikes.
Severn shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Usagi as he avoids it easily.
No luck for Severn with that takedown attempt.
Severn shoots in for a double leg but Usagi sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ken Severn. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Severn throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Severn looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Usagi is fending him off so far but Severn persists. Nope, Usagi circles away and we're back to standing.
Usagi misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Severn tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Usagi was well out of range. Poor timing from Severn.
Usagi pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Severn swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Usagi misses the jab.
Usagi takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
Usagi works over Severn's head and body with a nice combination.


It looks like Ken Severn has been cut.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Severn throws out a loose jab but Usagi uses good head movement to avoid it.
Severn is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Usagi.
Usagi defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Severn.
Severn fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Usagi manages to avoid it.
Usagi throws a head kick that half lands.

Severn misses with a jab, cross combination.
Severn fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Severn avoids the head kick by Usagi.
Usagi fails to land with a series of punches.
Severn with a jab.
Usagi dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Severn. That did some damage!
Severn swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Severn tries to clinch up but Usagi circles away and keeps his distance.
Severn throws a jab but it's blocked by Usagi.
Ken Severn seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Usagi keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Severn lands a nice hook to Usagi's body. Usagi takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
A head kick from Usagi lands but Severn takes it in his stride.
Usagi misses with a few strikes there.
Severn moves into range and connects with a jab.

Severn avoids a punch combination nicely.
Usagi tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Severn throws out a loose jab but Usagi uses good head movement to avoid it.
Severn misses with a combination
and Usagi counters with a nice low kick that buckles Severn's knee momentarily.
Severn is breathing heavily.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Usagi stuffs the takedown.
Usagi misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Usagi scores with a jab to the body.
Usagi throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Severn blocks a head kick by Usagi.
Usagi misses with a two punch combination.
Severn misses with an uppercut. Usagi saw that one coming.
Usagi misses with a double jab.
No luck for Severn with that takedown attempt.
Severn avoids the head kick by Usagi.

Usagi fails to land with a series of punches.

Severn feints and as Usagi raises his hands in defense, Severn changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Severn stops Usagi from standing up.
Severn in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Severn throws a big right hand that misses.
Usagi keeping moving, preventing Severn from controlling successfully.
Severn pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Usagi is keeping the position for now.

Severn drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Usagi dives on top into guard.

Severn trying to keep a closed guard but Usagi is proving a slippery customer.
Severn throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
Usagi trying to control the position from guard on top but Severn is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Severn is looking for a triangle but Usagi pushes his legs off easily.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Miyamoto Usagi dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Ken Severn's cut.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Usagi throws a sloppy head kick and Severn moves out of range easily.

Severn tries to clinch
and Usagi counters with a head kick. That will keep Severn thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!
Usagi will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Usagi misses with a body kick.
Severn misses with a takedown attempt - Usagi sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Severn throws a hook to the side of Usagi's head but Usagi sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
A nice combination there by Severn.
Severn fails to land the takedown.

Severn changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Usagi tries to avoid it but Severn manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Usagi to the ground. Usagi escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Usagi fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Usagi misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Miyamoto Usagi is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Severn throws a hook but Usagi blocks it.
A decent looking body kick lands there for Usagi.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Severn looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Usagi!

Severn goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Usagi turns into him and now he's in Severn's guard.
Severn being controlled here, momentarily.

Severn has control of Usagi's left arm, preventing Usagi from doing any damage.

Severn working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Usagi doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Usagi manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Severn is trying to control the position from the bottom.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Severn had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Usagi is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Severn Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Usagi's back instead.

Usagi wants to get back to his feet.
Severn is trying to stick to Usagi's back but Usagi is turning into Severn. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Severn's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Usagi.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Severn is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Severn trying to advance position but Usagi counters by regaining guard.
Severn trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Severn stopping the sweep attempt from Usagi.
Severn throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Usagi works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Miyamoto Usagi showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The cut man is working on Ken Severn's cut.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

Severn rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Usagi moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Severn is defended easily by Usagi.

Usagi wants to land a leg kick but Severn is out of range.

and Usagi counters with a two punch combo.

and Usagi counters with a head kick.
This has been an exciting period of action!

and Usagi counters with a huge head kick that drops Severn! The ref dives in to stop the fight and the crowd goes wild!
