PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Ras Butten (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Martin Ward (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Butten comes into the arena with Apoptygma Berzerk - Fade to Black blaring out of the sound system. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Ras Butten!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Martin Ward!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fotheringham, James Atkins and Richard Clark.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Butten connects with a nice looking jab.
Butten throws a head kick but Ward moves out of range.
Butten misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Butten tries a head kick but it misses.
Butten misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Butten lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Ward backs up against the ropes.


It looks like Martin Ward has been cut.
Butten throws a sloppy head kick and Ward moves out of range easily.
Butten lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Ward circles away quickly and effectively.
Butten misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Ward.
Ward takes a head kick and keeps coming.
Butten throws a sloppy head kick and Ward moves out of range easily.
Ward fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Butten walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Ward checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.

Butten tries a head kick but it misses.
Butten throws a body punch but Ward moves out of range.
Butten throws a head kick that misses.
Butten wants to slow Ward down by chopping away at his legs.
Butten misses with a head kick.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Ward.
Butten lands a head kick!

Ward shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Butten is trying to defend but Ward finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Butten wants to improve his position but Ward is controlling well.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Ward wants to work for an arm triangle but Butten is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Butten trying to keep hold of his opponent's head but Ward manages to pass to mount!
Ward avoids the attempt from Butten to control.
Butten is desperately trying to improve his position but Ward has a good base and remains in mount.
Butten sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Butten is trying to get back to full guard.

Ward is looking for a kimura here.

Ward is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Ward is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Butten gets full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Butten manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Ward manages to get himself to full guard.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Ward looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Butten has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Butten wanted to stand there but Ward had control of the position.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Ward tries to get back to half guard but can't.

That's time! Butten's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Ward drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
Ward shoots in and drives through. Butten sprawls well.
Butten misses with a two punch combination.
Butten lands a head kick. Ward smiles back at him and beckons him forward.
Butten throws a head kick that looked like it stung.
Butten pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Butten misses with a looping left.

and Ward counters with a shoot takedown. Butten fights it but they end up in guard.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Ward drops back, looking for a kneebar! Butten looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Butten looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Butten!
Ward is trying to escape the position but Butten is controlling the position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Butten wants to lay and pray for a moment but Ward keeps working.
Ward manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Ward is looking for a kimura here.

Ward is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Butten has managed to free his arm - good work.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Ward is working for a kimura but Butten is defending it quite comfortably.
Ward is breathing heavily.
Butten trying to control but Ward postures up.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Ward is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Butten is concentrating on defense, preventing Ward from advancing position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Ward trying to advance position but Butten counters by regaining guard.
Butten is trying to control the position but Ward postures up.

Ward has gone for a leg lock! Butten slips out almost immediately though and dives into Ward's guard.

Ward has his foot on Butten's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Butten works his way back into a safe position though.
Butten advances position into side control!

Butten wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Ward, who protects the arm well.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Ward tries to improve position but can't.
Butten moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
Ward is looking for a sweep.
Butten wants to lay and pray for a moment but Ward keeps working.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ras Butten dominated that second round.
The cut man is working on Martin Ward's cut.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Butten doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Ward counters with a nice double leg into guard.

Ward is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Butten is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Butten has escaped and now he's on top!

Ward had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Butten is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Ward Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Butten's back instead.

Ward has his opponent's back and is working for the choke.
Ward takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Ward is looking for a rear naked choke here but Butten reverses the position brilliantly into Ward's guard!

Butten's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Butten works a leg free and moves into half guard.

Ward looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Butten performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Ward is not content to let Butten control the position.

Ward is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Butten pulls his head out easily.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Butten sitting and controlling from the half guard.
Butten drops an elbow to the side of Ward's head.
Butten not doing much here.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Ras Butten just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
Ward gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Butten counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
A head kick by Butten misses

and Ward counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Butten!
Butten tries to hold on but Ward postures up.

Ward goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Butten turns into him and now he's in Ward's guard.

Ward is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Ward has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Butten can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Butten wants to get up but he can't break Ward's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Ras Butten is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Butten trying to control the position from guard on top but Ward is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Ward looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Ward being controlled here, momentarily.

Ward working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Butten doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Butten manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

And that's the end of the fight!
Martin Ward comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Butten has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
